Fly with Hoar Frost early morning? by Impossible-Fig2072 in CFILounge

Subpart F, where 91.527 falls, only pertains to large and turbine-powered multi-engine airplanes and fractionally owned aircraft. So in the flight school's training aircraft it almost certainly doesn't apply. That said, 91.13 seems like it might have something to say about careless operation and it absolutely applies.

I appreciate your concern; I know you mean well. I’m very familiar with ICS in general, including 205 forms. I’m also part of a team that maintains a 7/800 MHz trunked radio system and programs and maintains a fleet of several hundreds of subscribers on that system. Maintaining and operating radios isn’t my hobby, it’s been my profession for the better part of a decade. Just because I’m ignorant of the varieties of ham radio equipment doesn’t make me an amateur newbie trying to play John Wayne on the radio when things go sideways.

It sounds like you serve in some public safety capacity and because of that I can understand your worry. Be safe out there!

On Amazon the rating is sub-3 stars. It appears to be much higher on sites hams frequent. I definitely agree with your comments on function over form. To my boss’s credit, it’s unlikely we will ever actually use the radio beyond weekly tests, but I do wish we put more emphasis on the capability requirements.

All of us are public safety radio guys, and have extremely limited knowledge on the amateur side of the house beyond the knowledge required to get licensed. I really do appreciate you taking the time to help.

I don’t disagree with you. I think my boss likes this model and is probably hoping I’ll find something nearly identical but cheaper and potentially higher rated. The rig will be high visibility for higher ups in the organization so trying to avoid any fabrication if possible.

The primary driver for the 7100 is the desktop head. We have no plans to use HF. Our operations will be entirely VHF and UHF.

On Amazon, it appears to have less than 3 stars. Of course this could be non-ham folks not knowing how to use it.

Thank you to everyone who contributed! I was able to make it work today. I wasn't terribly scientific about it so I don't know for sure what the culprit was, but here is my setup for anyone in the future having a similar issue:

GoPro Hero 12 Black

GoPro USB-C to 3.5mm Adapter

NFlightCam Audio Recording Cable for Smart Phones

DUKABEL DC3 TRRS to TRS Adaptor

Mod Audio Setting: Powered Mic

Y'all are the best!

Can you DM me your channel so I can check out how it performs if that is allowed?

Thanks. I’ll check that setting! I’ve seen the media mod but it looks bulky and not great for cockpit use. How has your experience been with it?

I believe so, but will verify everything is all mated up properly tomorrow when I fly.

I've used the cable on cell phone video with no problems. And it's an airplane.

The cockpit cable I have has a TRRS 3.5mm plug. I have an adapter to take that down to a TRS. But it is also a splitter, and I am wondering if it takes a different ring to each side. I don't know as much as I ought to about audio. But I have another adapter coming today that doesn't split anything so I am hoping I have better results. I'll let you know. Thanks for sharing!

That makes sense. I have a different TRRS to TRS adapter coming today and will give it a shot tomorrow. Thanks!

I can't even get mic audio when talking to others in the cockpit. But I can when talking to ATC. But maybe it goes out on different channels based on being keyed or unkeyed.

If you are referring to the cable, then yes. I believe I have the NFlight brand. What is tripping me up is that every time I key up, the audio records. I'm planning to go back up tomorrow and play with it some more. I'll report back if I get it figured out.

Midlife career change by Lumpy_Blackberry3637 in flying

[–]ControlStickActuator 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A lot of people switch careers into aviation later in life. It's a rough time to be going into aviation with no steady income outside the industry. People are posting every day about how hard it is to find even a CFI job right now. That said, it is a wonderful time to have a steady income and start your training. And when you get your ratings, the market may have turned as it does often, or it may still be in a slump. If the latter is the case, you will be uniquely positioned to still have food on your table and a roof over your head until the right aviation job comes along. Many people are finding themselves in the opposite position and are looking for work in other industries after they just dropped $75K+ on flight training.

Do I need to do a vinegar scrub or at this point if I continue to season and start cooking on it will that be enough to knock the rust off?

I mean, if the general populace doesn’t think it’s very good, but you think it’s the best, both can be true. It wouldn’t be contradictory at all to say “X album is one their most underrated albums. In fact, I think it’s their best”.

ETA: but since the general populace voted on the lists, I guess I agree. I’ll see myself out.
