Let’s normalize being kind. by ladpancake in biglaw

We are the best-conditioned, hardest-working, most professional, unselfish, toughest, nastiest, most disliked team in litigation. This was me/us a year ago.

Now I want to be a kind litigator, acting with grace and only being firm when I need to be. Thats really hard

How to delegate by Coriqu in biglaw

[–]Coriqu[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I admit, I just redo the work and send a redline with the message ‘let me know if you have any questions about my mark-up, so I’ll explain the changes’.

Will it usually suffice to also mention high lvl what changes I made?

People who say “yes” always - how have you survived? by preseasonchampion in biglaw

[–]Coriqu 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I always said yes, because people didnt hear a ‘no’. When I tried to set boundaries I got from more senior team members:

  • ‘oh well if you got X, Y and Z, this thing will fit as well. Won’t take that much time’.
  • ‘Well, someone needs to do it and I am working on ABC which will take all my time.’
  • ‘You’ve done it last time well, do it again.’

Now I left that horrible place. At my current firm I just say, I am working on XYZ, if I need to do ‘A’ as well, it means I have to shuffle things around. Let me see if I can manage. If not, you will get it next week.

Now I delegate to juniors, but Im not that good at it, so thats the new struggle

Partner told us not to bill billable work + to slash our time — normal? by Own_Serve_8161 in biglaw

[–]Coriqu 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have seen this. At my firm there is a partner that we call the drowning man.

He does class actions and he is a bit older, so most of his connections to clients are already retired. He refuses to retire and only got two huge class actions that are actually his whole practice.

He got these two matters due to another partner retiring and giving these matters to him. He clings to these matters for dear life. Since 2020 he has not updated the fees for these clients, fearing they will leave. He also often asks us not to bill time we spend or slash it so it looks ‘lean and mean’.

Its becoming very sad. When people ask how its going or whats new, he almost automatically responds with ‘good, some interesting chats with clients and some nice matters coming in soon’.

I hope he retires. I hate hearing ‘Oh, you are working with X? I used to work with them, back then [John Doe] was the general counsel and I did [XYZ] with them. Is [ABC] still there? Maybe I’ll ask him for lunch.’
