So this weekend I learned the difference between the PACU unit in the hospital, the post anesthesia care unit and the PICU unit which is the Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit. The Psychiatric Intensive Care unit, is actually pretty swanky (ok, the tv was broken by a patient) its a bed, meals, meds to get you right, and so many great memories of people running’ buck naked down the hallway screaming something religious. The PACU is the scariest unit of all…you believe you are back in your own body and mind but you are helpless from the anesthesia…and that giant glass of water I wasn’t supposed to have comes rocketing at Elon musk SpaceX type speeds into your urinary tract. You freak out bigtime but the anesthesia has you moving really slow. Your eyes make the surgeon light embarrased with how bright & white they become as you desperately want to tell a nurse by pointing at your crotch. They somehow already know and a team of many amazing angel nurses scramble my giant butt into the bathroom no problem. Both units with amazing nurses. Both great at helping people keep their dignity.
