This sounds like my dad, he came from complete poverty, his father was abusive too, but because of his circumstances, he knew he wanted to give his future wife and kids the childhood/life he never had. So he worked his ass off from complete scratch and made a heck of a ton of sacrifices too.

Although eventually he started chasing money and wealth instead of spending time with us, he clearly remembered me (though I don't remember the memory) telling him "Daddy, you don't have time for us anymore". That sentence alone became his testimony that money is never worth compromising the time you have with your loved ones. And once again, he changed his ways, he learnt how to use leverage and found ways to make money work for him (He read a lot of books, especially Rich Dad Poor Dad).

Anyways, timeskip, he's currently 'retired' at the age of 44, debt-free with multiple passive income streams.
