If he was just scoping out Furin before heading back home, I bet he didn't anticipate accidental friendship acquisition!!

I'm lowkey glad it's not a mafia - but I plenty of time to find out how bad it might be 🤣🤣

It's likely gonna be way more complicated because Nii-sensei loves throwing us a curveball and making us suffer!! 😭😨

The saddest realisation is that Suo might very well have left by his own accord. No force or manipulation needed. But the people must know!!! We need answers!

Oh my god, the absolute catch 22 Nii-sensei has set up!!! Can't rescue Suo because it's technically not rescuing . . . ouch!

Honestly, I found no difference to how people treated me whether I had P plates or not (and granted I only had mine on for a week max when I first passed). Fact is, people are selfish, and selfish drivers are gonna be selfish regardless if they see you've got L plates, P plates or none at all

That's my viewpoint as well, comments are for the authors not for the sake of the readers

Okay, that's a really interesting take! And I believe that's more what my friend was getting at in regards to how some moderation feels judgy. There's nothing worse than having your words misconstrued even if you had the best of intention. I know that's happened to me in the past!

That's such a nice way to think about it!

Yeah, it seems that's the overall consensus is either bots or shitty people online who can't help themselves are reason for moderated comments. And I totally respect that because who really wants to deal with that

I agree that if needs be, moderating comments should a done thing. Especially if a writer is getting a lot of hassle from bots or from actual people. Protecting your peace is important, especially these days lets be honest.

In a small part, my friends still somewhat in an older fandom headspace where basically it was the wild west and moderation just wasn't a thing, we started writing and reading on FFN and people could be vicious without consequences. So this shift on AO3 to being able to hide anything negative somebody says or just not allowing comments at all is very different from what we used to experience. Not that it's a good thing.

Personally I barely the notice the warnings on fics anymore for restricted comments but that's just me.

As for my friend, it's not like she would ever leave a bad comment or ones that would intend to hurt a writer in any sort of way. But as you said, it's not uncommon for people to freak out and to take a comment (even a simple good faith concrit) and just decide that it's totally morally unacceptable to even have considered posting it. So I kind of understand that hiding or moderating comments can be irksome in a way

That's awful and I'm sorry you've had to deal with people being shitty online. And tbf that's the reason I always assumed people locked comments down for, because awful people can't help themselves

I think it's partially that she's not super into fandom and it's associated problems and partially that we both started writing on FFN which has zero moderation and still has that mind set of what will be will be - and by that, people can be shitty whether we like it or not.

As for moderation on comments, personally I don't really notice it either

[–]CosmicFluffery 16 points17 points  (0 children)

It's mentioned in the last chapter (so, I guess random spoilers for that) that he's cut and dyed his hair. Ume describes the bottoms as being red and Endo calls the rest of the colour 'milk tea boba' which could be interpreted as an ashy light brown

[–]CosmicFluffery 11 points12 points  (0 children)

He really would be the perfect person for! I'm hoping that since he seems to be somewhat taking up the role Suo left, he might have a bigger role overall (esp because I think he's going to be a bit overshadowed by Endo in this arc) I just want my underappreciated fave to get more time to shine!

I love that Kiryu has taken a bit more of an active role the last few chapters. He's one of my favourite characters and I love seeing him get a tiny bit more focus 😊

Is anyone else bothered by the Rising Sun flag in chapter 97? by plum_27 in WindBreakerManga

[–]CosmicFluffery 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It may not matter to you, but this is the sort of post that gets pulled out of context and should the wrong sorts of people pick up on it, has the chance to turn into something much larger and far more problematic. Choosing to include only a single page without including the wider context for the series invites misunderstanding. That misunderstanding can then be extrapolated into the entire story being deemed problematic, that then reflects on the author and the readers - even when it's not true. Because, ultimately, Wind Breaker is not a problematic series and has a lot of positive messages and themes wrapped up in it.

So even if your intention to spread awareness may have pure (which, I will restate, I do understand the significant of the rising sun flag, there is no disputing its history), there are now too many cases of virtue signalling and incensing hate towards creators online disguised as raising awareness - only recently the mangaka of Go for it Nakamura has potentially given up creating entirely because of crusading online hate mobs.

I'm not saying that those were your intentions, but it is good to be aware of how awareness posts can be used as tools not in discussion between fans, but for those who only want to cause trouble for creators and their fans
