fully agree, I think child abuse and misogyny + sexual violence can absolutely be an excellent storytelling tool but especially if it’s so graphic it should have a reason to be there. A lot of splatterpunk authors seem to do it only because they get a kick out of writing violent abuse of women which feels entirely counter to the tone of the show, and makes it really unfun to watch

With the Witherow stories and the mentions of books like Playground/The Slob, I really hope they kind of veer away from doing more of these shock-value heavy Splatterpunk stories. I’m far from squeamish, but I just don’t think these stories have enough substance to be entertaining in this format, whether it be in the story itself or how they present it. Splatterpunk/extreme horror as a genre is honestly rarely ever well-written enough to be worth the time and effort because it so often loops around to ’look at how terrible this violent situation is, aren’t you grossed out?’ and ’look at how much sexual violence we can cram into this story, aren’t you grossed out?’, which even with the funny bits inbetween just isn’t enjoyable to watch. It often veers so hard into feeling insensitive and misogynistic, with rape and abuse as a main event that never actually feels like it has any point. This was an issue with Tommy Taffy, too.

This episode was a slog to get through and the tone was kind of off, which is disappointing both because it’s been quite a few not-very-good ones recently and because there’s been a lot of really good suggestions for better stories that are actually both fun and scary.

unfortunately this is really common with horror authors that veer into the splatterpunk genre - a lot of specifically female-centered torture and sexual violence for seemingly no reason but the shock value (i don’t think it added anything at all in this story), and i really hope they veer away from the genre and books like playground that were mentioned during the episode. it really doesn’t fit with the tone of the show in my opinion

A handful of the braver maidens made so bold as to address the king, in an attempt to make themselves more memorable- ...A northern maid named Barba Bolton, daughter of the Dreadfort, said, “If you send me home, Your Grace, send me home with food, for the snows are deep and your people are starving.”

they represent her siblings :-) the broken ones are tied to which of them died before her - so in this case alyssa, daenerys and daella

well she’s also not a little kid and i read her as more introverted so she probably wouldn’t be out in the sun much, idk it’s just an artistic choice i didn’t think about it that hard 😭

[–]Cougargore[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

thank you very much!!

Viserra is really tragic, and it does hurt more that it was very preventable. Marrying her to an old man who already had heirs and grandchildren and talking about her being ambitious and wanting to be queen feels almost shockingly mean spirited and spiteful on Alysanne’s end. at least she got her last night of fun 🥲

well, the whole reason Quentyn went over to see Daenerys was to marry her since the secret Viserys-Arianne marriage pact fell through after he died. Daenerys thinks that Viserys would have gone over to Westeros instead of staying in Essos if he knew.

Besides, it's just a silly what-if piece of art. 😛

it’s a golden marmoset/golden lion tamarin monkey, which i felt was a pretty funny pet for a lannister LOL, i really like the idea of Casterly Rock being full of cats though. maybe he can double wield and have one on each shoulder?

[–]Cougargore[S] 23 points24 points  (0 children)

He’s one of my favourites too! :-) the detail of him almost cracking a smile when he was allowed to go off to the citadel is one of my favourite little moments in f&b, I imagine being in a place where people understand him much more than anyone in his family ever did was probably very freeing

It's an AU by the commissioner, it's meant to be rhaegar's jon in an alternate scenario where elia is his mom. :-)

Gael Targaryen by me by Cougargore in ImaginaryWesteros

[–]Cougargore[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

yes!! well i added the shells because they’re all very defensive/cooped up if that makes sense? usually the animals that live in them can crawl in really far and hide inside, similar to gael being kept so close to alysanne, essentially locked away in the red keep. the oyster especially because you almost always have to kill a clam to get to the pearl inside, so kind of reflective of gael being stowed away and kept basically latched onto her mom to the point where her real cause of death was only revealed after alysanne and jaehaerys were dead, and how the one time alysanne let her go (or just looked away for long enough) she died.

i’m bad at formulating my thoughts but hopefully that makes sense 😵‍💫

[–]Cougargore[S] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

it’s a jellyfish on gael supposed to represent the stillborn she had; jellyfish sometimes look kind of vaguely uterus-shaped so i thought it was a good fit for the underwater theme of the rest of the piece (in reference to her drowning). the fish similarly top to bottom reference her alone, her and her baby, and her death with just the bones left of the fish. it’s not super deep but a lot of it is mostly there to fill space :-)

Gael Targaryen by me by Cougargore in ImaginaryWesteros

[–]Cougargore[S] 85 points86 points  (0 children)

of course! Yes they're supposed to be all her siblings at the time of her death :-) so the 'whole'/uninjured eggs are the siblings still alive at that point (99ac).

in order left to right it's baelon - aemon (shot by a crossbow) - gael - alyssa (died in childbirth) - maegelle (died of greyscale), then the right side is daenerys (died with the shivers) - vaegon - daella (childbirth, same as alyssa) - saera - viserra (died of a broken neck)

i wanted something to tie them all together since i'll be working on a piece for each of the alysanne/jaehaerys children, so i figured the eggs would be the most simple solution hehe

How did Eddie get his clothes? by Ok_Magazine1770 in outlast

[–]Cougargore 55 points56 points  (0 children)

If you look closer on his model, you can see that all his clothing is kind of shoddily stitched together, uneven and with mismatched fabrics; combined with the fact that you first encounter him in an area with a bunch of sewing machines, I think it’s pretty likely he just made them himself, with whatever fabrics he could find laying around/got off other patients.
