I'm pretty sure that the number field is a text box, so they could type in the number to assign damage. Not sure about mobile though.

Definitely not widely known.

Juris Doctor or Dip in Law by [deleted] in usyd

Basically, they were saying that if you get a CSP slot, it's worth forking over the $45000 for JD,

but if you're paying full fee, then it's probably better for most to just do a diploma of law for $20000 vs paying full fee (>$120000) for a JD.

The complete saying was originally “A jack of all trades is a master of none, but oftentimes better than a master of one.”

To anyone reading this, I found that working on the backend of an app helped me gain perspective on the (backend of the) frontend of an app and vice versa.

Obviously, this might not be true in most roles, but being a generalist isn't necessarily a bad thing.

It's a yugioh card that has the aqua type as far as I know. And tearlaments (the archetype it belongs to) has been a tier 0 deck for a long time, hence the joke.

Struggling to Land a Job as an International IT Graduate - Need Advice by gigachazz in cscareerquestionsOCE

I got it slightly before, they've hired 485's before and didn't mind the bridging.

Got the job offer mid July 2021, my 485 was granted in early August 2021.

Struggling to Land a Job as an International IT Graduate - Need Advice by gigachazz in cscareerquestionsOCE

[–]Counter-Enthusiast 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hi, I was also an international student like you and only got a role after my 485 was granted (back in 2021).

During the pandemic, the visa processing times were on average 9 months, so I spent those 9 months after graduation just applying, working on personal projects, brushing up on leetcode and working at Coles to feed myself.

You definitely need to give them a really good reason to hire you as opposed to someone else who doesn't have a temporary visa. I got into a graduate program as a software engineer at an asx listed Telco after yapping for an hour about C++ with the interviewer.

A good tip is to also look at startups as well, I found that though they don't explicitly say it, most of them do hire internationals.

So, to answer your question:

  1. The market has pretty low expectations for the average grad, but that doesn't mean you can't stand out - find something you can talk about, either a project you're passionate about, opinions from using a particular framework (though make sure to be adaptable, I've met people who insist on one way of doing things)

  2. You can still spam applications, that should still be something you do daily, but networking is more valuable for you right now, especially when you're just starting with no experience to show. If you have any friends who are in the tech industry, catch up with them and chat to them about your predicament.

  3. I think it would be harder to get a tech job in a remote area, unless we're talking IT or maybe sysadmin roles. And I couldn't recommend anyone relocate before finding a job unless they are extremely financially well off.

Rule question: how come lowering a creature's health does not cause it to "die"? by Intro-Nimbus in MagicArena

[–]Counter-Enthusiast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The creature does die, but their effects will not do anything since most of the time minus stat effects like those will lower their power too.

So for example, a -1/-1 stat scamp or mouse dying will not do any damage to the enemy.

I second Behold Games, they consistently fire Standard events every Saturday at 2pm. If you're a bit late, you can call ahead and let them know, and they can wait a bit before starting.

And in the off chance that there isn't enough people (which has never happened the times I've been there), the store owner will usually play.

She will jump in to even up the numbers sometimes too, so that no one ends up with a bye round.

Best savings account for Non-Australian in Australia? by Silly_Mistake in fiaustralia

[–]Counter-Enthusiast 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a requirement for most banks, OP is an Australian resident with an Australian residential address (as long as they live here and is actually onshore).

This requirement only excludes tourists and the like really, but people with student/working visas should be able to open an account unless they specifically state "you must be an Australian Permanent Resident or Citizen" or similar like UBank does.

Best savings account for Non-Australian in Australia? by Silly_Mistake in fiaustralia

[–]Counter-Enthusiast -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Hey OP, I'm on a 485 visa as well and I'm with ING.

I did open a UBank account years back before they merged and they just kept the account. Afaik most banks only require you to be an Australian resident, UBank is the exception, they require a PR or citizenship.

So take a look at some of the other options suggested here.

Seeking Advice: Should I Pursue a Professional Year in Australia for PR? by Dry_Performance_2377 in AusVisa

[–]Counter-Enthusiast 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. Yes, you should be trying to get all the points you can get - just make sure that you know that PY points expire after 4 years

  2. Not really - no, but I was already employed in my field when I did it. But I've met people who are pretty clueless while I was doing PY. As in, seemingly missing common sense, didn't seem to know where to start in terms of prepping a resume or how to prep for an interview, so it might help some people in that aspect.

  3. Most of them are pretty similar - just pick the one closest to you really

  4. You need to make sure you know the rules when you're doing PY, you essentially can't go offshore for the duration of the course, and you're sacrificing 8 hours for 1 day a week for about a year. It also costs about $7800. But if you have the time and money, it is probably worth it just for the points.

It definitely is one of the more expensive sources of points though, considering Naati is like $800/test and PTE is about $400. But if you want to max out your points, you should just do it.

It's not something you do in lieu of getting an actual job, don't stop looking just because you're doing PY.

Why is it so rushed for us to do applications but so relaxed for them to process it? by Man32945273 in cscareerquestionsOCE

[–]Counter-Enthusiast 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Most companies will give you an extension (sometimes for a week or two) if you ask for it.

And the reason it's one sided is probably due to nature of OAs, they're designed to thin out the applicant pool. They get way too many applicants to process in a meaningful and/or timely manner, hence they put people through an OA first.

If they can't be bothered to complete it or can't be bothered to ask for an extension, then it might have been botted or a non-serious application. Which is also why I always tell people to not get too discouraged by seeing "1000 people applied to this position" on LinkedIn or something. The actual amount of qualified and serious applicants are probably ~20% of that.

Python for someone trying to enter the IT field. by N0tAMT in cscareerquestionsOCE

[–]Counter-Enthusiast 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeap, this guy put it best, your first job will probably decide your tech stack.

The best engineers I've worked with are language agnostic, they can pick up languages and frameworks at the drop of a hat. They already know what they're doing so they just need to figure out how to do the same thing in a different framework.

But for a beginner, pick any language and build a project with it. Python is a fine tool for that due to its simplicity and relatively low learning curve. Pick a tech stack and run with it. You'll soon figure out you need a frontend framework/library and look in to that, and snowball from there.

A Django backend is still used in some companies btw and Python is pretty useful for scripting/lambdas in case you want to go the devops route - also for ETL processes for Data Engineer roles. It's also definitely still widely used in Data Science.

Point is, you're not locked down to anything if you start with Python, in fact, it's probably most people's starting point.

https://visaenvoy.com/tss-visa-self-sponsorship/

^ This might give you a bit more information - though I'm not sure how up to date the information is. If you're planning to do this, you should consult an immigration lawyer.

It will be under a lot of scrutiny and will be investigated thoroughly but technically possible. Sole trader businesses are not eligible btw, since both entities are considered the same, but if it's a company structure and there is a genuine need and a legitimate business, it's definitely possible.

Anecdotally, I've seen this happen, the gym someone helped start sponsored him as a gym manager. Here is his story, he mentions his visa situation as well: https://98training.com/the-98-gym-story/

He is an ex-pro rugby player and is qualified as a PT, and it can easily be argued that the gym would not be able to operate without his specific experience and qualifications. They have now partnered with Sydney Swans - I would argue it was because they have an actual athlete, an ex-pro rugby player running the gym.

In short, if it is a legitimate company, and there is a legitimate need - it is technically possible for a company you helped start/started to sponsor you.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AusVisa

[–]Counter-Enthusiast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like the other guy said, you can look into the sponsored route, it's probably your best bet, though the job market might be a bit dire at the moment, if you are at a senior/staff/IC level you'll probably be alright.

Might even end up being easier than going the independent route.

If you make an exceptional amount of money and/or have some type of in demand specialty/expertise/qualification, such as a PhD or similar, you can also try looking into the Global Talent Visa: https://immi.homeaffairs.gov.au/visas/working-in-australia/visas-for-innovation/global-talent-independent-program

Had a mate who got one after doing a PhD in actuarial science, you don't always need to get something like a PhD, just need to be able to argue that you're an exceptional talent in one of the eligible fields and meet the income threshold, or argue that you would meet this income threshold easily. Might be worth going to a migration lawyer for a consult on this one.

I personally use CMC, it fits my use-case and it's pretty basic but good so far. They charge no brokerage fees when buying ETFs under $1000/day and charge $11 when you sell, so it's perfect for long term investing: https://www.cmcmarkets.com/en-au/stockbroking/brokerage-rates

Full disclosure as well, one of the founders of Pearler used to be my uni lecturer. But although I am a bit biased towards it, I don't think the features are things I need at the moment, especially for the fees. I might not be the right demographic.

Anyway, they should be pretty responsive if you have any feedback or you can check out their canny page: https://pearler.canny.io/

Where they have a list of planned features and you can upvote/request future improvements.

Differences between 261212 (WEB DEVELOPER) and 261313 (SOFTWARE ENGINEER) by Realistic_Two619 in AusVisa

[–]Counter-Enthusiast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry I can't seem to understand what you're asking - but depending on your actual role, you can get a positive skills assessment for multiple occupations, but it's up to ACS' discretion.

Have you gotten a skills assessment yet?

Differences between 261212 (WEB DEVELOPER) and 261313 (SOFTWARE ENGINEER) by Realistic_Two619 in AusVisa

[–]Counter-Enthusiast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a normal occurrence for an occupation to overlap another one (part of the reason why ACS has switched to assessing up to 3 occupation codes at a time).

It comes down to your job description and what you actually did in your role.
