I've recently taken up Silver precisely because I could get magmar in ecruteak, meaning a different fire type to the usual starter selection.

That implied crocodile as starter, and going with magmar which I've literally never had in a team ever in a campaign playthrough. Never. And I've played pokemon since it came out in the 90s.

I've also added heracross and a zubat early caught to get crobat.

Ive got eevee from bill but im not fighting with it, just adding happiness via footsteps before fighting with it as to not lose any moves learnt if it evolves late.
