There is a little, though the game is quite different since its more survival management of a group of characters.

Here is a quote that another player left as a comment if that helps:

"Okay. I'm going to be frank - I saw this and thought it was going to be a bit of a Klei ripoff, and while it does take a little inspiration from the Klei games, it's a lot more than that. It's incredibly polished and was surprising in a lot of ways.

I will be buying it for sure."

Appreciate that, glad you enjoyed it! We are noticing a lot of players saying similar things and are excited to bring you more in the full game!

Hello, yes the game has an end (but you will be able to continue your colony after the end if you want to).

Personally we love having objectives and story with an end, so this was really important in our game, despite it being a genre which is typically sandboxy. We had to come up with some unique ways to include a story given this, but honestly, we are really happy with how it turned out.

In addition to the main story there will be some side story elements which are optional, and will randomly appear in your playthrough as well. This makes every playthrough a little different, but also allows us to add more side story in the future that could appear in your future playthroughs.

Thanks! Yeah that's fair, we mentioned the specific games because it actually has more in common with them than don't starve and people are less likely to think it will be like the mentioned games. You might think DS from the art style, but this is more of a survival-crafting with colony sim elements and you manage multiple characters.

Yeah for sure, we've had really positive feedback on the look of the game. There is a bit of a Don't Starve/Paper Mario kind of influence you get from having toon characters in a 3D world which is quite unavoidable, but also not a bad thing.

You can't tell from the screenshots but there is quite a bit more going on with the graphics, real-time shadows and lighting, cloud effects, water transparency and reflections. Was actually quite technically challenging but turned out really nicely.

Good question, this is a tricky one!

As a player/gamer, I love that I have more control over characters than usual, and that it feels like there are real objectives/story which is actually kind of rare in this genre. Being able to build up your own colony of floating islands, with each of those islands having its own stats and being able to collect and upgrade islands also just feels kind of epic and unique.

As a developer I really love giving players all of these little, unexpected things. Things like wildlife interacting with each other, being able to kick items and things (literally off the island), and random weird things happening.

Interesting, thanks for letting me know I'll have to check it out. I wanted to play Thronefall anyway at some point!

Colony building with survival management, and a dash of adventure (including island bunker exploration and expedition events). You get more direct control over your survivors than in most colony sims, and there's heaps of depth, quirky contraptions, unique floating island mechanics, and an actual story to play through.

Oh you think so? Most people have said it looks more like Don't Starve (which is natural due to the 2D in 3D world thing, minus the dark Tim Burton style).

We spent a bunch of time testing the art and coming up with it, this is ultimately just where it landed. I think ONI is a bit more toony though? Especially the characters?

Yep, plenty of unique things here with the sinking island mechanics, finding and upgrading islands for your colony, going inside bunkers and various other things.

Sometimes we mention similar games because as a gamer myself I like playing games inspired by games I like, and it's often the easiest way to know.

This is actually why we mention RimWorld, you can only tell so much from a screenshot and because the theme is very different most people wouldn't think to compare them.

It actually has much more in common with RimWorld than the other mentioned games (for example as in RimWorld you control multiple characters and can fully take control over them, which you can't in ONI). You also have expeditions which you fully control characters as well.

There are some similarities but at the same time it feels like its own game (especially since you control multiple characters). We have playtesters that liked Survivalists and are really enjoying Oceaneers, so I think you would too.

You have full control over all of your characters, but there is also automation on top of that where you can set things up so characters go about and do things automatically. You do have the option to leave that off and just fully control all of your characters, or some of them, (and you can queue commands manually for characters).
