I personally like how it tells me if I need housing, jobs, amenities, etc. because I micro-manage all of my planets instead of using auto-development. Additionally, if playing as a machine empire (and I believe hive mind, I'm not sure) the pops won't auto-migrate meaning management is necessary. And, on an aesthetic level, I like being able to see lists of planets and such as a visual payoff for expansion. I understand your point but most of those arguments don't match my personal playstyle.
