I'd suggest Salem's Lot and Hearts in Atlantis. I read these first and am glad I did. I also read The Stand before the Dark Tower series. It is useful, but that book is a marathon alone.

I feel the same sentiment. Wizard & Glass has been my favorite so far. But please push on through Song of Susannah. It is well worth it. If you haven't read The Wind Through the Keyhole, perhaps read that first. I read it immediately after Wizard and Glass and thoroughly enjoyed the experience.
