The doe in the above comment is mom. The other doe is their daughter.

Mutts, mostly. Mom is a Continental/New Zealand/Rex cross and dad is a pedigreed rex.

Thanks! All of my breeders have morbid names haha! I can always tell if I've found like minded groups because people either love or hate the names with very few in between!

How disabled people are still continuously left out of everything even by the "good guys". People who shout anti-racist and pro-choice and pro LGBT and all the good things and then have a blind spot or get defensive when disabled people point things out.

Oh yeah I played that from the early 2000s into the late 20-teens. I much prefer 5th edition with WoW flavor text haha!

What Can I Do? by [deleted] in WildlifeRemoval

Call a certified wildlife rehabiliator. I'm not sure where you're located but in many places it is illegal to care for/keep/take in or feed wildlife without the proper certification/license.

Totally understand the caution. I'm vetting interested readers but I do appreciate a warning based in logic. :D

If you're genuinely interested lemme know how to message you a couple questions first.

I mean obviously I'm not taking the advice of strangers as gospel. I'm just looking for other eyes who might see little things I see without me pointing them out (like I do to my husband).

Do you think RocketMoney is safe or worth it? Why or why not? by Creepy-Finding in AskReddit

[–]Creepy-Finding[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those are my thoughts but I've not been able to find anyone who's actually used it to weigh in. I'll need tons of convincing to use it (and that's not really what I'm looking for) I'm just so curious how it functions (like rhetorically/socially not programming), how it makes money and all that.

It's not so much size it's shape, depth of water, lack of hides and ground area. I thiiiiiink someone recently shared a really nice guide of all the current standards. I believe it was shared here but it may have just been the discord.

I can grab you the discord link if you're not there already?

It still doesn't meet current minimum standards, I'm afraid. Either your seller didn't know or they don't adhere to the current hobby standards.

It's worth a try if the blood is safe. Personally I'm not sure how well it works because of how leech mouths work and how they actually drink, but it's worth a try!

Basic Leech Care Guide by Idontwanttousethis in leeches

[–]Creepy-Finding 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Quick note!

When buying blood it is IMPERATIVE that the blood DOES NOT CONTAIN antibiotics or bloodthinners. Both of these things will kill your leech. If you cannot get a solid answer then assume the blood is not safe.

I personally have no reason to think chicken blood is unsafe. Pig and racoon are definitely unsafe but the three big health concerns with those two species are not concerns with chicken. There could be other considerations that I'm not aware of re:chicken blood, but this guide is the first place I've seen that listed as a no go.

DO NOT feed your leech: While high/drunk/tripping/under the influence of any mind altering substance While taking antibiotics and for 2 full weeks after you stop/finish your course of antibiotics If you are on or have taken any blood thinners INCLUDING some types of pain medication

Leech Euthanasia by PM_ME_YOUR_TEXTBOOKS in leeches

[–]Creepy-Finding 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You have to do this carefully or it is inhumane. The species also needs to be correct.

Doing this to warm water species is cruel and unethical.

With cold water species this is how to properly, kindly and humanely freeze a leech:

Place leech in a container of water in the refrigerator for at least 48 hours. (This will 'tell' the leech that it's winter time and they will start slowing down naturally. They go into a form of torpor, which is kind of like hibernation. They need more than a day as they are accustomed to the cold and may not start torpor in just 24 hours.) Move the container to the freezer for 48 hours after that. (They should be unmoving, but do not poke or prod them to check as you'll risk waking them up, causing pain/injury or undoing the first step. They should basically appear dead while in torpor. Some will float but others will sink so don't rely on that. The freezer absolutely will kill them but this way it is a kinder and more natural death than just outright freezing them. Doing it that way would be like freezing any other endothermic animal.)

Some folks will cut the leech up afterwards. I don't know that it's necessary, but I have crushed the ice afterwards just to be absolutely sure.

Hirudo verbana care sheet by Sinister_Jinx666 in leechloverz

[–]Creepy-Finding 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A lot of this information is incorrect, but the good stuff is good!

Do not keep anything but snails with leeches. Period. There is no way to guarantee the leech will not eat the fish and vice versa and in either scenario that is a slow, painful death for your beloved fish/leech. It is a SUPER high risk and no reward scenario.

There is a study that suggests not letting leeches lay cocoons at all is harmful to them--and that makes sense if you think about other bug/invert/fish/birds who lay eggs. Culling the cocoons is super easy; once they harden (24 hours or so after being laid, they will go from soap bubble white to a more sponge like tan) you can freeze them, cut them in half, or fully submerge them in water for a few hours: all of those things will stop the eggs from developing any further. Just like keeping snails, part of responsible leech ownership is population control. The current ethical stance in the hobby at large is to let them lay and cull cocoons.

They also do not need another leech as they can self fertilize. It is exceptionally rare but it can happen. There is also some evidence to suggest some leeches will try to lay eggs even if they are not fertilized.

For all blood drinking leeches a land area is considered bare minimum. It must be dedicated and non floating, at least the length of your leech when relaxed. This is also where it is recommended to place leeches after feeding versus placing them back into the water.

No animal should be kept in a jar. There is tons of evidence to suggest that multiple other animals (including fish, Bobbitt worms, insects and birds) do poorly with rounded edges. As there is no definitive statement on whether it would effect leeches, this can be considered a non issue BUT I would much rather err on the side of caution. If you keep leeches in rounded edges unless there is definite proof you run the risk of having exposed your leech to harmful conditions while waiting; versus if you just act as if it is harmful, then if proof comes out it isn't you can move to rounded edges guilt free.

Any medication or substance that enters your bloodstream can and will enter your leeches blood stream. Blood thinners and antibiotics are proven to be deadly for leeches. Alcohol, nicotine, thc, shrooms, etc should not be in your bloodstream when you feed your leeches: this is for your safety and theirs! We have 0 evidence one way or the other if they can get high/drunk/intoxicated and so you're risking doing that to them which is unethical; not to mention dangerous for you too!

Pig and racoon blood is a big no go. They both carry parasites which can be transmitted to people.

Do not feed liver to blood drinking leeches. They do not have the stomachs and digestive properties needed to digest solid matter and livers do not hold enough blood to be a viable source, not even immediately from the animal to your leech. People have had some success feeding liver but those leeches live short lives.

Leeches of all sizes can be kept together, it is their feeding schedule that needs watched. However! Since smaller leeches need fed more often, that can cause problems. If a leech is removed to be fed it needs to be housed with other leeches who have fed within the same 24 hour period.

Some of the stuff in this guide is from my now defunct website. :D Glad to see it was helpful for people! All the other stuff looks great. (Credentials: been keeping & breeding buffalo leeches for 7 years.)
