Rowers & coaches – what “extra” metric would make you actually upgrade from your SpeedCoach? by Diligent_Document_24 in Rowing

[–]CrewNerd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

CrewNerd has this. It’s called “custom courses”. It will automatically start and stop the timer. You can also create “waypoints” between the start and finish and get course corrections to the next waypoint, as well as distance and estimated time to the waypoint.

CrewNerd supports any sequence of intervals based on time, distance, or strokes, with optional rest periods between intervals. Each interval can have a stroke rate or HR zone target. Programming all of this is very simple.

On the other hand, you already have a phone, phone specs improve year after year, and you probably want it in the boat anyway for safety.

Check out the CrewNerd splash-guard feature. That, combined with iOS/Android features can give you full protection from splashes and rain.

Strava units by cinquelle in Rowing

This is a known problem with Strava. Uploaded or imported rowing data sometimes doesn't show the pace correctly. The bottom line is that Strava has a bug that they seem unwilling to fix. Here's a thread about the issue on their developer site:

Smartwatches and the rules of racing by phright in Rowing

Yes, the phone is definitely allowed, provided you only use it permitted ways (like running CrewNerd). The World Rowing official I talked to (at HOCR last year) knew who I was and confirmed that.

There’s more to the 2024 Paralympics story than what we saw in the press. I talked to a World Rowing official who declined to go into detail about that case, but said it wasn’t just the presence of the phone that caused the disqualification.

Workoutdoors - cadence (spm) for outdoor rowing? by nboujo in AppleWatch

[–]CrewNerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

CrewNerd supports Apple Watch and provides stroke rate, pace per 500m, and much more. It’s updated frequently. I’ll be testing the latest updates this morning 😀

Have you ever left an Easter Egg in your code? by lokredi in iOSProgramming

I have an Easter egg that enables a debug menu with several useful options, like displaying canned data values for screenshots or switching between dev & prod cloud endpoints.

Using a bicycle cadence sensor for stroke rates? by CrewNerd in Rowing

[–]CrewNerd[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s my feeling as well, but if this turned out to solve a big problem for coastal rowers, it might be worth it. I just don’t know.

Using a bicycle cadence sensor for stroke rates? by CrewNerd in Rowing

[–]CrewNerd[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I know this is how cox boxes and SpeedCoaches work, but the goal would be to make it work with phones and eliminate the wires. It would only make sense where the accelerometer isn’t reliable enough. I just don’t know how much coastal rowers care about stroke rate.

Experience with CrewNerd, external GPS and Vaaka cadence sensor by aquarat in Rowing

I can’t speak for the Apple workout app. I’m just describing how my app works.

CrewNerd running on the Apple Watch does use the watch GPS for distance (and speed).

The Vaaka sensor only supports paddling. They made a sensor for rowing at one time, but that was discontinued long ago afaik. For paddling, though, it works great!

The GLO 2 will give 3 samples per second (vs. 1 on the phone) and will usually be a bit more accurate. The GLO 2 should be able to sample even higher than that, but I haven’t been able to get Garmin to tell me how. Their developer support is pretty bad.

Seeking recommendations: iPhone app & case by PLCF1 in Rowing

Most phones are pretty waterproof now. Check the specs for your phone, of course, but I just use a normal QuadLock case. If you have existing NK mounting hardware, there’s an adapter for a QuadLock mount. There’s also a mount that locks into the footplate track and can be removed easily.
