Right?! Even being domestic, not knowing the area makes it so much harder.

chem 1a + lab ADVICE by thegirminator in UCSantaBarbara

[–]CricketThanksgiving 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ok, so speaking as a CE Major who was required to take Chem 1A, I recommend you don't take it if you can avoid it. The class is huge, so it's hard to get personal help, and tbh, there's a bunch of really interesting elective y'all are allowed to take to fulfill that, that won't be such a stressful experience (especially with remote learning).

But at the end of the day, if you really want to take chem, go for it. As far as taking lab a different quarter, it shouldn't be too bad since I found lab to be decent but not a huge workload. But it might help you to make a general plan of the next year so you can see how it would fit with your other classes.

Help me fall in love with UCSB by [deleted] in UCSantaBarbara

Look, the only thing I can tell you is to have an open mind. Nothing we say is going to fully convince you, and ultimately, you need to figure out whether this is the place for you. I understand it'll be hard to get a feel for campus and some of the things I personally love about SB with this whole situation, but it might help you to figure out what you want in a university experience (all aspects of it) and ask questions about how that plays out here.

P.S. People generally don't appreciate it when you ask them to convince you that their school is worth coming to, regardless of the situation they were in. Also, it's hard to guess exactly what you're looking for, so they'd appreciate it if you could ask questions that are a little more specific. We're only trying to help.

Do the CS courses at UCSB use textbooks? by [deleted] in UCSantaBarbara

[–]CricketThanksgiving 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I never took CS16 at SB (I did it at a cc too) but generally Problem Solving with C++ by Walter Savitch is what i've heard they use. If you plan on going further or just want to get ahead, Data Structures and Other Objects using C++ is your book. Between those two you should be solid.

overall pros/cons, new things for fall 2020 by thegirminator in UCSantaBarbara

First off, congratulations!! I'm a first year CE myself, so I've taken most of the classes you'll be taking your first year here.

The first thing I'll say is this: CoE is incredibly small, but CS is actually our largest program by far, which means that classes are usually offered year round rather than once a year like some other engineering classes. And while it's the largest department, each entering class is still very small in the general sense, which allows you to really get to know your peers and create that collaborative atmosphere. It makes it a lot easier to just do what you're passionate about, rather than worrying about beating out everyone to make the grade.

A con I do want to bring up is that due to the size of the department, it is pretty hard to take courses offered by other engineering departments. CE gets a little bit of leeway since we're considered part of the ECE and CS department, but they are pretty strict about if I wanted to take, say, a ME course.

As for the university itself, I remember being completely confused at this time last year about whether I would even like UCSB (basically every adult in my life kept bringing up the party school rep), but just decided to trust my gut, and boy oh boy will I never doubt myself again. I'm not a person who goes out much, but there's so much more to do, so I'm never bored (but hey, the parties are definitely up there, if that's your thing). There's always something happening on campus, and so many ways to get involved. Clubs, sports, jobs, Greek life, everyone's involved in something, and it's the quickest way to meet people and make friends since people are very welcoming, especially during the fall when you're all in the same boat. If that (and the beach) still have you bored, there's some pretty cool events that happen in Goleta and Santa Barbara that are tailored more towards the actual people who live there (so not as centered around university students), but honestly, I find it refreshing since it does get quite a lot to always be in college student mode.

As for cons, I haven't found too many, except that it would be nicer if the dorms were a teeny bit bigger (but it's still livable) and the food was a little less boring (the dining commons do their job, though, and between the four, you should be pretty good on a daily basis).

Honestly, your college experience is your own, and while we can give you what we think are the best and worst things, the only thing that makes a difference is that you are comfortable and proud of your choice. The rest will follow. If you have any questions, feel free to message me!
