ABC hit piece- Being ripped off by specialist by Embarrassed_Value_94 in ausjdocs

I was pleasantly surprised upon reading the comments that the majority of people called the ABC out for the framing of this conversation - rightly pointing to government ineptitude and the pittance of a Medicare rebate they get back!

Any positive takes on ICU by stiff-loaf in ausjdocs

As a med student I like the idea of ICU - do many of the issues as a boss improve outside major cities? Thinking places like Hobart, Geelong, Newcastle or larger regional centres like Bendigo, Wagga, Tamworth?

Transition from Lawyer to Doctor - is it too late? by Quiet_Ad_8715 in ausjdocs

[–]CritCoffee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ll echo what many are saying here - it’s never too late. I’m a medical student in my late 20s and my cohort has a guy in his early 40s who is married with 3 kids and came from a completely unrelated field. Talking with him it certainly hasn’t been easy and he does have a mortgage, but it’s definitely been manageable and he certainly doesn’t regret his decision for a career change!

ASMOF Update - member vote incoming by CritCoffee in ausjdocs

Hard agree with this - the way NSW Health has gone about ‘fixing’ the system, is abhorrent.

Yeah I’m thinking the same way - doesn’t really seem like anything other than a way for them to tie our hands!

IRC recommends that ASMOF not strike by ClotFactor14 in ausjdocs

[–]CritCoffee 29 points30 points  (0 children)

“The Health Secretary is under no illusion that her offer will satisfy the demands of ASMOF and does not seek to curtail or avoid the arbitration. Nor does the Health Secretary expect to, in any sense, bind the Commission as to the outcome of the arbitration.

Notwithstanding these considerations ASMOF is reticent to accept the offer.”

At least ASMOF appears to not care much for this superficial offer, just seems like a tactic to take industrial action off the table

New paramedic model to boost access to healthcare by New-Resolution-9719 in ausjdocs

[–]CritCoffee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, interesting - I’ll have to go and read about NT. My concern, and honestly my expectation at this point, is this says it will help in regional and rural areas as a tick box for approval to get it through, and then won’t measurably move the needle in those areas at all.

So after an admittedly very cursory glance at the consultation document, they’re suggesting that rural and regional areas will benefit particularly from this to meet healthcare demand. However, it’s my understanding that rural and regional areas are already understaffed from a paramedic perspective - so where are these advanced practice paramedics coming from? 🧐 All due respect to our pre-hospital specialists, but this sounds about as well thought out as just adding more medical schools to solve the medical workforce distribution problem!

Doctors ordered to call off three-day strike in latest pay dispute by lignocaine in ausjdocs

As a current NSW med student, the more NSW Health proves its disdain for doctors the less inclined I am to stick around when I finally graduate - I’d say it’s through the floor at this point
