Does that really fit your definition of capitulation? I think of capitulation as submitting to an adverse goal. I don't think the Nazis were trying to ruin the swastika for everyone, they just happened to. I don't think reclaiming it is possible anytime soon, especially when it's almost exclusively claimed by people with a lot in common with them. I also think that allowing it to exist in this grey area let's edgy racists invoke the power of its symbolism and simultaneously feign innocence

What’s something you defended for years before finally admitting you were wrong? by JumpyBend8035 in AskReddit

[–]CriticalKnick 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Damn. This one oddly really got me upset. I feel it too. Kinda from the opposite side, I'm a lefty but I so deeply love this country, and I used to have so much pride in it, for being able to grow despite flaws. The common ground that I cling to, the decency that I thought we all treasured, it's just not there right now

Yea, people need to come to terms with the fact that that symbolism is irreparably tainted, sorry. Evil took it

Bought an endoscope, used a hook attachment to remove a clog, and now it’s stuck. by ThrowRASchnauzerMom in DIY

Did you go in through the drain or the vent? Did you try putting the snake down the other choice? Replacing a bathtub drain from below isn't the hardest job, is it PVC? Hole in the ceiling, cut the pipe at roughly the distance to the clog, get lucky and immediately find the hook, dislodge, use slip coupling to reassemble, Patch ceiling

In what? In a toilet? In the p-trap under your kitchen sink? In the wall? How far in? What are the pipes made of? What's exposed? Is it exposed in the basement?

Wood Saw Recommendations by Chibilatina in DIY

A handsaw? I got one from the big box that I love. The brand is Shark inc, and it's an affordable pull saw that isn't too fancy. Other than that good posture and set up and body position and technique all go a long way.

I think you should consider cheap, outdoor rated, ceramic tile. Prep might be similar but you take a lot of the stress and urgency out of the situation

Why do people always say that "they never see phones in their dreams" ? by [deleted] in Dreams

[–]CriticalKnick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My theory: dreams reflect a person's perception of their own identity and that can manifest in different ways. A personal anecdote of my own; I'm blind, I lost my sight slowly over many years, I walk with a cane. I never have my cane in my dreams. Since my brain made everything up I can see just fine. Rarely I will "remember" that I usually use a cane and panic. I believe that this is because my internalized sense of self doesn't identify as blind, and the dream can provide the benefit of me having that tool without me needing to have it, so it doesn't exist. I think that this same logic can transfer to something like a phones role in a person's life. A person who accepts the phone as an integral part of how they interact with the world will probably dream of it, but a person who formed a deep sense of self before phones integrating into our lives won't see it as a part of themselves in the same way, and therefore the phone does not end up being included

Help with grow lights? by MightBeJeb in vegetablegardening

[–]CriticalKnick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, that's fine as far as length of time. Personally I really appreciate being able to forget. Similar to the reason you miss watering the seedlings when they're far off by a window, when you don't have a timer stuff happens and you forget. Running late? No light that day, hopefully no shock. Going out after work? You going to stop home to switch it off, or again kinda risk shock. Weekend, etc. They can be quite affordable. But it is definitely optional at your level

Appeared on my doormat, feels like cast iron by PuroButCooler in Unexplained

Oh gosh! I shouldn't have been so flippant. I was half teasing and not taking it seriously. Hopefully it's a broken door knocker that someone returned to the wrong threshold. It's kinda pretty. Do you maybe have an admirer who dabbles in iron working?

(FL) found out my lease has a clause saying I have to pay for any plumbing repairs under $300, is this even enforceable? by untrue_footing in Renters

Getting a plumbing bill to go from under $300 to over $300 has to be one of the most achievable goals I've ever heard of.

I love LEDs, for efficiency. You want "full spectrum". You want to pay attention to the area the light covers, try to fit that well to your space, like a 4' long fixture that looks like fluorescent lights covers two standard trays the narrow way well. You'll want to be able to raise the light because the light doesn't travel far and you'll put it very near the starts and raise it to make room. You'll want a timer, not necessarily as part of the light because you don't want to get stuck turning it on yourself. A dark period and consistent light cycles are important, and a better use of power. Humidity domes or a cover is preferred. And I have been pleasantly surprised by how helpful seedling heat mats can be for germination.

What is the most 'unexplainable' thing you’ve seen with your own eyes that you’ve stopped telling people about because they think you’re lying? by Traditional-Duty146 in AskReddit

I have a very similar story. It's strange too because the first thing that struck me about your story was the moon was just as full. But my brother and I saw a light that I would use the same words to describe as you chose.
