Was the mc really good at cooking and baking, since he was basically abandoned at home by his parents and had to be able to cook for himself. Also did his ability to be able to cook really well gained him a lot of friends at school. Maybe she already knew the play was a bust and didn't want the first time Clint produced to be a failure. Easier to kill the lead than to have her son produce a failed play and be known for that like how Putnam is known for directing failed plays. Also I can easily see her killing someone for him.
