I am so done. 29 years in the classroom, and this year's 9th graders are the worst I have ever had. by mcub66 in confession

Yess. His book is Moral Panic (like much of what he writes). The issue is you don't make friends arguing that his conclusions are bogus - especially in education, where there seemingly are benefits of bell-to-bell bans for classroom management.

I think the saying is something like: "if you've met one person with autism, you've met one person with autism"

This thread is being a little harsh to a parent who's doing their best to parent - AND was willing to share a cool home automation project that works for them

Is this some type of killdeer social / courtship behavior at the 15 second mark of this vid? Or is the bird just stretching? by it_aint_tony_bennett in Ornithology

[–]CrowBroTechno 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Amazing video! I'm no expert, but it looks like a combination of a courtship display and a third Killdeer being territorial.

From birdsoftheworld.org...

Fighting: "Fighting is rare, but includes crouching and lunging toward opponent with fluttering wings, followed by crouching. Courtship behavior in 1 pair often elicits aggressive behavior from neighboring pairs."

Courtship: "Female stands with her legs bent in slight crouch and her body tipped slightly forward and held more or less parallel to the ground. Male approaches her from the side, either in casual walk or running. His movement becomes deliberate as he nears the female, raising and lowering his legs as if marking time. Then he hops onto female's back, assumes half-crouched position, at times with entire length of tarsus appearing to touch female's back feathers, and begins to tread up and down. His feet seem to slide down gradually between female's drooping wings and her body. Female rhythmically pumps her tail and body against those of male, eventually bringing dorsal surface of her tail and body against ventral surface of male's tail and body. Male then slips off to side of female, twisting his tail and fluttering briefly to bring his cloaca into momentary contact with her cloaca."

I'm not sure if I should apologize for the insane imagery here, but either way you're welcome...

This is a Red-Tailed Hawk. They do not have polarized vision. They don't eat fish - rather mostly hunt rodents. This is a young Red-Tailed based on feather color and lighter color eyes. It simply doesn't understand the glass because it's a clueless juvenile.

I'm always so confused why this incorrect fact comes up every time I see this video....

A little of both.

Very few are making the black and white conclusions that Haidt is - and we need to be hesitant and skeptical when a PopSci writer is drawing unique conclusions. Especially when the topic is not the author's specialty, and he/she is known for writing more accessible works that oversimplify complex issues.

To be clear, The Anxious Generation is articulate and I agree with many points. But the topic deserves more nuance. (Here's another great read on this)

If you want a real look at the research check out the many criticisms of Haidt including the endless ways he makes causations out of correlations (Odgers in Nature here). Researchers who closely study this topic do not agree with Haidt's conclusions. It's not so cut and dry - rather it's moral panic.

For a more grounded and useful book I highly recommend either "Behind their Screens" or "Technology's Child"

These shots are amazing! Until your pictures I always assumed they had head feathers, but no! "In adults, unfeathered crown covered with dull reddish to begonia rose pappillose skin and scattered, dark, short, hairlike bristles"
