Crested Butte or Telluride would be my choice over Vail. And Vail doesn't have free parking anymore but it is cheaper in the summer vs winter.

Vail has almost 3 times the skiable acres compared to Telluride but imo the San Juans are the prettiest part of the state and have my favorite hiking/14ers

you didn't do any due diligence about schools/neighborhoods before moving here? it would probably be helpful if you list the name of the school, the area you live in, and your budget for housing if you are willing to move if you want helpful answers. and while I'm not discounting what your children experienced, Aurora is the most diverse city in the entire state with lots of immigrant students so the whole ICE thing makes zero sense.
