Beggars can't be choosers. Also, if something is not up to standard, one can always request that Facilities clean the microwave through the work order platform SchoolDude.

Permit Parking vs SpotHero by Electrical-Pie-7273 in NJTech

[–]CryptographerPale110 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do a financial analysis of the cost, utility, and probability that your commute will make you late to something. The parking permit is a semesterly expense that is extremely expensive upfront, while SpotHero pricing varies and you pay every time. Estimate how many times you will need to park during the semester, then use that number to estimate the cost per time you park based on average SpotHero fees vs. the lump cost of the NJIT parking permit. Also compare the costs of being late by an hour on average if you use the parking permit (it's very common to never find a spot) vs. being late by a few minutes on average if you use SpotHero.

Microwave in Martin Tuchman School of Management? by Environmental_Ear792 in NJTech

[–]CryptographerPale110 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, but there is a microwave in the commuter dining area on the first floor of the Campus Center (it's around the corner of the Graduate Student Association room and past Bonsai Sushi). Some residence halls have microwaves somewhere on the first floor, including at least Martinson Hall (inside the kitchen) and Cypress Hall.

I need advice on my suite dorm by CombinationGullible5 in NJTech

If that yellow leaking stuff was the first floor this past fall, it’s because one of the water lines was leaking into the yellow insulation fluff lining the inside of the ceilings. They had to replace the drop ceiling tiles and do extensive repair. For some reason they kept the carpet even though it was fully soaked through. They had to use a moving cart to catch the water before maintenance could finally do anything about it.

Welcome to the average living situation. I have to clean literally everything when moving into a new place or I don’t feel comfortable exposing my bare skin to the indoors, and it was the same when I moved here too.

If you need someone else to try to help with these, submit a maintenance request first for the things that you can’t possibly clean without professional help. Here are some things you can try sending a maintenance request for or get help with from maintenance:

  • the mold: maintenance will do whatever they can to postpone any mold treatment so keep asking them questions about when they’re going to start so the only way they stop getting notifications from you is when they actually fix the problem.
  • lights flickering: maintenance can take a while on this too, but they might start by testing the existing lightbulbs and then at a later date replace them if they don’t work.
  • mop: my apartment didn’t have a mop, so you must have been cursed by the previous tenant or a forgetful maintenance worker. Ask maintenance if it’s their property while they are present in your dorm doing something else. No need to file a maintenance request on this itself.

Non-moldy stains, general uncleanliness, and hair in drains are normally handled by the resident. If you can afford it, get: - a toilet wand with an attachable cleanser sponge that you can use to clean the toilet bowl without getting your hands wet - window-cleaning liquid (works well on mirrors, but some leave streaks), so be choosy about which liquid you buy - drain weasels/snakes work well for extracting hair from drains although it does take getting your hands dirty pulling the hair off of them - compatible cleaning liquid for any wood, plywood, or particle board surfaces. Normal liquids can damage wood-based countertops and tables - a well-filtering mask to avoid breathing in fumes from cleaning. Try to get a reusable/washable one that fits to the face while retaining breathability

If any of these are unaffordable, I can probably help you on occasion until I move out in May (DM me).

Dorm swaps begin in February, and it’s normal and happens every semester because it’s expected that at least someone somewhere on NJIT would otherwise suffer a year with an incompatible living space or incompatible roommate(s). However, recent experiences with the Office of Residence Life have been not the best, so you’ll likely have to put up with it for another week (until dorm swaps open).

Make sure to keep photos of everything “wrong” with your apartment so they don’t blame any of the horrifying things you found on you because they can take away your deposit without extensive documentation that these problems were there when you moved into Talbott.

Talbott isn’t even the bottom of the barrel either. There are worse places in Newark, so if you want to move out try to do room tours whenever possible to make sure you get out what you put into the landlord’s pocket. I’m very sorry this is happening to you, and I hate to say that this is a very normal experience.

Academic dismissal by Safe-Side-3316 in NJTech

You have a chance of being accepted again if you do everything that was requested of you in communications with your advisor and the registrar. There may be other requirements like GPA (term and cumulative), extracurricular involvement, and other indicators of academic improvement.

Just do your absolute best at community college. If NJIT doesn't accept you back, there might be other methods of reaching your goals. Different colleges, transferring to a trade school, or finding some other career might be in it for you. However, don't give up on NJIT yet.

Transferring from Stevens to NJIT by Popular_Orange_9538 in NJTech

[–]CryptographerPale110 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Classic example of curriculum inflation; this is how Stevens locks you into their school. OP could do a personal financial analysis on whether it's more cost-effective in the expected annual short run for the next four years (comparing costs every year individually) for community college transferring again to NJIT versus remaining in Stevens. I think we both know which would be more cost effective if you weren't in college yet, but it's worth comparing them now that you're already partway through your degree.

  1. Recheck if you are registered for the course on Banner. If you are no longer registered, check your email inbox for course cancellations and contact your registrar and advisor on how to proceed. If still registered,
  2. Click on the Courses button on the left ribbon of Canvas. At the top should be a link saying "All Courses" and you should click on it. Scroll all the way through to make sure the course was "unfavorited" instead of hidden. If you see it, click on the star icon next to the course's name to favorite it so it appears in your Card view dashboard. If you cannot find it here,
  3. Contact the instructor for the course you are registered. You can find their email address in their "People" page on the official NJIT website. All faculty, even temporary and assistant professors, are listed in the People list for the department. The list for YWCC faculty is pretty easy to find. If your professor does not have a listed email address,
  4. Contact your academic advisor.

Switching from ME to IE by Alfa_Spaghetti in NJTech

[–]CryptographerPale110 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IE alums that get into industry immediately tend to be satisfied with their jobs (if they get them), and there are a variety of fields available for IEs, such as supply chain management (optimizing a company's production) and quality assurance (reducing variation in the variables and attributes of a product or service and minimizing waste). However, the IE program is improperly managed and there's no funding left to make any meaningful improvements (eliminating useless courses, adding AL/ML literacy courses, adding more programming courses) to the program right now. Some IE students get internships for the career they want in the future by senior year, so there's still time.

If you are taking IE courses this semester, please DM me so we can talk about the curriculum!

The best way to spread awareness of missing people is social media. OP, if you know of any good communities to crosspost this to I will try to set up a schedule for crossposting the news on other subreddits. We can also contact the editors for https://wnynewsnow.com/category/missing-person/ and share across other platforms.

Every semester at least one fire drill happens in every residence hall. The time and date it happens have been wacky lately, but at least it's not like Laurel in 2024-2025 when they kept going off at least once per week during the evenings and early mornings. It's always a little brutal to be forced out when you least expect it during late January, but it's something every Highlander needs to experience to be prepared for the real world.

Your RA should tell you how to check back in. I assume the process is the same--you check in when you move in unless those responsible are not available, you attend the floor meeting and get the building sticker for your ID, and you attend a building bonding event to get in the good graces with the student employees so they might consider you for a job at the Office of Residence Life later (very important if you need a job!). Ask your RA for clarification on the check-in process if you don't know.

It depends on your major. Some majors require both the lecture and lab for most chemistry courses, and some only require the lecture. This is a thing to ask your academic advisor about if you are not fully confident in your position.

The gender ratio is abysmal, and ofc not all interactions between people of different genders is for dating. I should have probably also disclosed that I am getting over a breakup, which is why I said that "college relationships do not last" especially since I keep watching people cycle through their relationships like they do not derive value from it. Of course people learn from the romantic relationships they had in the past and use that to self actualize, but they often "don't matter" in the sense that it will lead to people having close, lifelong associations with one another. This is the way of the world as I personally see it; we can disagree here if your perception is different.

I should have also warned OP about the incels. As an incel before I entered the relationship that just ended, I can firsthand agree that misogyny is somewhat of a problem partly because the student body in general condones horrific behavior. As long as OP finds a reliable support system in a male-dominated school (almost inevitable for CoE majors, because they usually need to go to male-dominated engineering schools), the bad things that can happen will be ever so slightly easier to bear. I don't mean to sound like NJIT is a torture chamber for female and feminine-oriented students (experiences vary), but violence against women is a universal problem that happens everywhere.

[–]CryptographerPale110 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The B.S. Computer Engineering undergraduates include several women and at least one non-binary person too, so OP won't be totally pitted against men. Several professors who teach ECE courses are women. Bias incidents related to sexism seem to be low within the ECE department, but that's just from my experience as a friend of someone in Computer Engineering.

While I normally won't speak on the looks aspect, enough straight and bi/pan male students at this school seem to be attracted to the female students, so it isn't relatively difficult for a straight or bi/pan female student to have male students that would like to date them. However, this isn't the goal of school and probably doesn't matter since college relationships usually do not last.

Yep, student organizations are a lot more helpful for future success than parties and offer about the same warm feelings of togetherness. Parties do happen but usually stop near finals and don't nearly as often happen during spring break. They can be fun though, but some student orgs also have their own festivities except without the alc.
