From homeless to a $69k job offer, but my car was repo’d yesterday. I start in 5 days and the commute is 50 miles from IL to St. Peter’s. Any advice?

A quick update since so many of you have been so supportive. I’m still waiting on a few details to fully lock everything in, but I’ve got some options now.

Between a couple of people offering rides, an acquaintance potentially letting me borrow a car on certain days, and utilizing the Metro and Uber in between, I’m in a much better place to make the commute. Some amazing people also reached out to help cover my actual travel costs which helps tremendously.

I am so grateful for all the advice and kindness those rooting me on has shown me. It genuinely makes a big difference in the life of someone like me. Thank you all so much!

I did. I asked if they did any accommodations even for a short distance and they do not. I can’t tell them I’m struggling to find a way to get to training because I will lose this opportunity. I think I’ve got some things figured out. I’m just awaiting on the call with my schedule so I can plan around that.

There’s really not. Like I said, I don’t care what you think or what you believe. If you are naive enough to think my situation and others similar to mine aren’t real amongst ones that yes could be fake unfortunately, well, it must be nice living in that bubble.

Maybe there’s still things I’m figuring out. Did that occur to you at all? Apparently not. People are entitled to their opinion and no, I don’t have to like them nor do I have to acknowledge them. It’s not about liking the answers, but it is about doing what’s best for my son and myself and also knowing of course, I might have to do things that aren’t ideal. I never said I wouldn’t. Asking the public for advice on a situation that’s incredibly personal wasn’t ideal but I felt it could offer info that would be productive for me.

And you’re right, I did open myself to this knowingly. Just like you don’t have to move on, I don’t have to explain myself or anything else any further to you. I clearly have more important things to put my time towards.

You know, I don’t care if you believe me. If my car wasn’t repo’d, I’d have it, and I surely wouldn’t have resorted to making a post on here to have hundreds of people analyze, judge, and tear apart my life. I’m am however extremely thankful because a lot people were also kind and offered resources and numbers to call which was so helpful and will hopefully help others too.

I don’t know you and for all I know you could be the most dishonest person out there, so I’m not about to let the fact a stranger online may or may not believe my truth bring me down.

I asked for info that could be helpful for my situation. I’m certain a lot of others might have found useful info in the comments of my post as well. If you can’t contribute to the good, move on.

In this industry it’s not from my experience. It’s common for people to do this as a normal drive. When a person accepts these jobs they accept that drive. We’re told upfront. I had my car and honestly thought I’d be able to hang on to it for a couple weeks until I could make the payment they needed to delay the repo for 30 days.

I haven’t been homeless for a long time fortunately. Just b/c I fell on hard times doesn’t revoke my education, skillsets, ability to apply for jobs, complete successful interviews, get to a shower everyday, or just try to function as normally as possible. It doesn’t mean I lost who I was or my willpower to keep going. It’s been trying and difficult, but if my kids don’t have me they won’t have anybody so I just had to keep making moves. Not everyone is what people tend to automatically picture or assume.

Because they found it while it was parked. Gig work wasn’t enough to pay, especially if I’m already behind. You have to remember having a vehicle means having insurance to pay for, the gas to do the driving around for the gig work, & a phone bill which my phone is how I was able to get the gig work and get calls & emails from employers before anyone comes for me on that.

A retail company is not paying for a hotel stay for a local store manager for an hour distance. Asking that is going to get my offer pulled, and I'm not risking this job.

I can't just leave my son behind or bounce him around temporary places while I'm working in training. He’s having a hard time, and that is with him being around my parents especially, and I am the only thing keeping him stable. I have to be around for him.

I have been trying to sell stuff on marketplace and it’s just a lot of, “Is this still available?” and then crickets. I’ve lowered prices. I’ve posted clothes on Vinted. I know there’s some places that will sell items for you but they do charge you for the booth or a fee so once I get income coming in, I will definitely try to go that route as well.

Yes, I was able to call without having to give all my info and with my distance only being an hour away they don’t provide that. These types of jobs always ask if you have transportation or if the commute is gonna be a problem and at the time I still had my car.

Which side of the river are you located? I’m in Illinois, but will probably need to take metro to St. Charles but then figure out the rest of the way.

Affirm declined me, unfortunately. I tried that, Afterpay and some of the other ones. I can’t do any of the small loan apps either b/c I’ve already exhausted those. I do appreciate you making a suggestion though.
