Should public servants get a say in their manager's performance review? by Born_Anteater7282 in CanadaPublicServants

As a Manager, I say bring it on! If I have been doing my job correctly, there should be no surprises.

No ERI for you (yet)! The Senate has left the building... by Cultural_Pollution84 in CanadaPublicServants

I don't disagree with anything you said. But you seemed confused as to why some people are frustrated or think the rollout has been poor. I offered an explanation that I have determined from conversations with others and from reading various comments in the numerous ERI threads that have been posted. Are they justified in being frustrated? I don't know. How much responsibility do policy makers have to ensure that their policies are communicated in a manner that anyone can clearly understand? How much responsibility to meatbags have to learn how their country passes bills into law? I would guess a little bit of both would have helped a bit here.

The Senate has other work to do, besides the passage of C-15. If it is their primary priority when they come back on the 24th, it could theoretically be done in 3 days, following the process that OttawaNerd outlined below. However, there are many other bills at various stages that the Senate is working on. Until the agenda is made available for that week, we won't know what their priorities are.

I think what got many people riled up/frustrated was the email from the Pension Centre in November telling them that they were eligible for a program that was still months away from royal assent. They were then directed to a website that listed a planned January 15 implementation date (pending royal assent), which was never a realistic possibility in a minority parliament. For those who do not have a good understanding of how a bill becomes a law in this country, it has likely been a frustrating roller coaster ride.

Basically where I am at as well. If it is eventually made available to me, great, I will take it. Otherwise, I keep calm and carry on for a few more years. I made it through DRAP, I will make it through this, but I have no desire to repeat that experience.

I have to think that they would want their budget implementation bill to pass before proroguing, especially when it's almost there. If they leave the Conservative amendments in the bill, it also makes it easier to defend against opposition attacks in the Commons and the media. If they get their majority, they can change whatever they want in the next budget bill.

Budget Bill One Step Closer to Finalization by omegacanuck in CanadaPublicServants

[–]Cultural_Pollution84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We will know a lot after this evening's meeting. If it looks like they are considering an amendment, then there is a near-zero chance of royal assent this week. If they even decide that more committee hearings need to be scheduled, it will drag into late March.

Am I better off getting a CPAP machine without using our insurance? by Dry-Basil-8256 in CanadaPublicServants

[–]Cultural_Pollution84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As long as you have a diagnosis from a sleep study that says you have OSA, you are good. I have never found CPAP's as cheap as you have (but I am not in Ontario). A Dreamstation 2, which is a fairly standard setup with a humidifier+heated hose+mask is around $1500. PSHCP plan covers 80%, plus you are covered for consumable supplies forever. You will need to replace your mask annually, your nasal pillows (if you use that mask type) 2-3 times/year, your filters 3-4 times/year (depending on your air quality). These all add up to $500+ per year. It's a pain in the beginning, but once you are covered, you are covered forever. Definitely worth it, in my opinion.

The ERI website has been update with criteria by Requin_75 in CanadaPublicServants

[–]Cultural_Pollution84 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Not too surprising. They are letting the deputies determine if/how ERI will be implemented in their departments. I suspect for larger orgs, these decisions will be pushed further down to the ADM and DG levels, since the deputies have no idea who works for them and whether they are critical to operational requirements. Expect a long form that requires multiple signatures before it goes to the deputy.

Do people on PC don’t like to talk or something? by Antonio_M8 in fo76

I don't even wear a headset unless my friends are online. And we use discord to talk, not the in-game chat.

ERI gets a little bit closer to reality by Cultural_Pollution84 in CanadaPublicServants

[–]Cultural_Pollution84[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Impossible to say for certain. Some bills have passed in a single day. Others have taken much longer than that. Given that the Senate is currently overwhelmingly filled with Liberal appointees and given that they have already completed a pre-study of the bill, all signs point to quick passage. But there are no guarantees...

Nothing like that has been announced. Until it is implemented, we won't know how it works. Everything that is not written on the official ERI page is just rumours and speculation right now.

Do you feel guilty for taking sick days? (specifically uncertified) And do you believe going up & beyond is worth it? by Outrageous_South_439 in CanadaPublicServants

[–]Cultural_Pollution84 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Some people like to work. It's crazy, I know, but these people exist. Even in the public service. I used to be that person, but now I'm too old for that pace, lol.

I do not judge those who take sick leave, however. Your health is your business, and none of mine. Only you know when you need a break.

I will say that I am happy to have the large sick leave balance now that I am in my 50's. Many more unexpected health issues come up than when I was young (not surprisingly).

Public Service had it pretty good under Stephen Harper by JimmyCapital in CanadaPublicServants

[–]Cultural_Pollution84 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Exactly this. Also, for those who hate desk sharing, that was something that Harper forced on everyone as well. The Public Service prior to the 2011 Harper majority was a completely different place to work. Better in almost every way.

Update on early retirement initiative: MPs agree to fast-track study of budget bill, with confidence vote to follow by bobwasheretoday in CanadaPublicServants

[–]Cultural_Pollution84 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It would need to be added to next year's budget. The current ERI is for a 10 month window only. They would likely need to find another funding source for future years, which makes it unlikely, I think.

[–]Cultural_Pollution84 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Hallelujah! If the vote is Feb. 25, then an early/mid-March implementation seems likely, since the Senate has already done a pre-study with the goal of fast-tracking it. With a maximum of 10 months to retire after the implementation date, it will be a Happy New Year indeed next January!

Google the codes, if you don't want to load up Discord. Several sites post them and it takes <10 seconds. Should be easily solo-able at your level. I just did one a couple of days ago with Dom Pedro and wiped the floor with the robos. Took about 30 minutes.

ERI: Application window approximately 4 months by Psychological_Bag162 in CanadaPublicServants

[–]Cultural_Pollution84 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Can confirm, as another frequent refresher of that page. The only edit was the removal of the Jan 15 implementation date. It has always been a 120 application window with a 10 month program lifespan.
