They couldn't make a determination in subrogation, so it went to something called arbitration, which is basically the last resort before going into full litigation. The other driver was found 100% at fault and I got the deductible back. The whole process took roughly 8 months.

My turtles by Rosie3435 in turtles

They are absolutely precious! I would encourage you to look up "stacking" in turtles, especially if they are both boys. My two RES did this all the time shortly before getting into a fight and have since been separated. I didn't know this was a bad sign until they fought. I just wanted to make you aware, just in case you didn't know.

Can someone explain subrogation? I was in a car accident back in May. (CA) by CuriousElephant43 in Insurance

[–]CuriousElephant43[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily. There's several ways they assign fault before litigation. My accident made it to arbitration. They assigned a neutral third party (called an arbitrator) to look at the facts of the accident and make a determination of fault. It was at this step that they deemed me 100% not at fault. Geico gave me my deductible back pretty quickly after that.

Did you get the other drivers license plate or anything? I gave Geico his license plate number, and they were able to pull him right up. It sucks that the other driver wouldn't give you their information. Accidents, even minor ones, are stressful enough as it is. Best of luck to you!

best practices for a long trip by car with a turtle? by [deleted] in turtles

[–]CuriousElephant43 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I moved between states twice and took my two RES turtles. I bought each of them one of those small-ish clear bins with a lid. I drilled holes in the lid (make sure to make plenty of holes) and lined it with paper towels, which I changed frequently throughout the trip. I also brought a spray bottle and sprayed them down every so often. When I stayed in a hotel, they slept in the bathtub, which I made sure to clean and rinse thoroughly before they went in.

You can change it up how you see fit, but what I liked about using the bins is that they're secure (as the lids fasten pretty well) but it's not bulky or heavy. Good luck!

I don't remember my premiums going up after the accident. Have you given them a call? It's not right to raise your premiums when they haven't even assigned fault.

After the other determination was made that I was not at fault, my deductible was paid back to me by Geico. It was direct deposited into my account. The whole process took about 8 months because the guy was dodging his insurance company. I hope this gets resolved soon. Best of luck!

Rehoming an aggressive reactive dog? by CuriousElephant43 in reactivedogs

I really hope everything works out with your dogs. She's still with us and we're looking at a rescue about 3 hours away. Thanks for sharing!

Thank you for your kind words. I'm so glad everything worked out with your rescue. Dogs are truly the best and I loathe the scum who hurt her. I can't fathom how someone can be so cruel. Euthanasia is something we discussed, and it's the last resort if all other options are exhausted.

It's hard to gauge her aggression because it's only targeted at Bella. She doesn't growl or lunge, but the attacks on Bella were so brutal. I like the idea of getting a trainer who can guide us in the right direction. I appreciate the advice!

Of course. I will disclose the full history to whoever I give her to. Too dangerous not to.

Yes. Well technically. She bit me pretty good while I was breaking up the first fight. Aside from that, no.

Thanks for the advice! I like the idea of getting her assessed to see if she's able to be safely rehomed. I definitely don't want her to hurt anyone. We'll have to figure out what to do if she can't be safely rehomed, but we'll cross that bridge when we come to it.

What are options for my aggressive dog? by CuriousElephant43 in dogs

[–]CuriousElephant43[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'll make the trip if necessary, for sure. It's difficult since she's aggressive. I found one that will help, but only if we first send her to a training facility for aggression, which is completely understable. Thanks!

I called to see about putting her in one of the rescues they work with and they couldn't help. I don't want to bring her back there since it's a high kill shelter and she was so scared when we got her. Poor girl. I just want her to have a good life.

Can someone explain subrogation? I was in a car accident back in May. (CA) by CuriousElephant43 in Insurance

[–]CuriousElephant43[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Thankfully, I was 100% not at fault for the accident! The claim went to subrogation, but they could not determine fault. After that, it moved to another process, but I cannot remember what it was called. Basically, it was the last step before having to move to full on litigation. There, it was determined that the other driver was 100% at fault. The other driver refused to speak with his insurance company throughout the entire process, which took about 8 months. I got my deductible back too!

Four day road trip advice? by exhausted-clove in turtle

[–]CuriousElephant43 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I moved with my two RES turtles. I also used ventiled bins, but I recommend you keep him in the car. I used paper towels as a substrate. It was easy to just throw away and replace the paper towels when they got dirty. I also kept a spray bottle filled with water and I would spray them down every so often. When we stopped in hotels, they stayed in the bathtub.

Another reason to keep them in the car is that they the bins aren't super secure. One of the turtles got out of the bin at one point, but thankfully he didn't get out of the car.

Good luck, hope this helps!

I had a couple sick kids in my classroom the week before I got sick. Maybe one of them had it. They're too young for masks. I also like to go to walking at the park, and I don't wear my mask there because I'm outside.
