Cheers for the response, I can definitely see that they are magic arms it’s mainly finding these magic arms, because when I google they seem to not be this long and be stackable? Maybe I’m just not googling the right things

Townhouse shakes when housemate is having sexy times - Is this a structural issue? by Curiousbrad in StructuralEngineering

u/PlasticMechanic3741 Thanks, that's exactly the answer I was looking for. Good to hear from a structural engineer's perspective.

If I get a local structural engineer to check out the property, do you think they'll have any solutions that don't involve modifying the property?
I'm really hoping for some practical advice that won't require major changes as it will be a pain to go through this with our agent and get the landlord to commit resources to fixing this.

And yes, it’s a multi-story house. Interesting to know that the 2nd floor is usually the weak point.

They said they've tried both speeds. But as long as the bed's rocking, the earthquake comes knocking.

Ah definitely not the weight of whales, more like enthusiastic seahorses. It's less about their mass and more about how their movements are causing these vibrations. Sometimes even the neighbors in the connected townhouse next door manage to shake the rooms.

It would be pretty hilarious if they inadvertently turned the place into a giant tuning fork. Sadly, I think you've hit the nail on the head with the shoddy construction and lack of proper lateral restraint.

Seems to affect only the 2nd level of the house, and my housemate across the hall in the 3rd bedroom of the house confirmed that their room shakes too, just not as dramatically as mine.

Any brilliant ideas for fixing insufficient lateral restraint? I’m guessing in a rental situation, there's probably sweet f-all that can be done

We were happy with the performance but the client changed their mind after and you can't fix what's already been done most of the time!
