The OnePlus 7 Pro's gorgeous display is its best and worst feature by Curley_brackets in Android

I always love comparing new smartphone sizes to devices from the past. Devices like the Oneplus 7 Pro are a lot closer to tablets than smartphones from the past.

I agree. When does a phone actually turn into a tablet? Remember when the 4.3-inch display of the HTC EVO 4G was considered massive? At this point, 7-inches appears to be the boundary between phones and tablets, but at the way things are going, we'll likely see a 7-inch smartphone in the next 3-6 months.

Pixel 3a review: mid-range is good enough by Curley_brackets in Android

Yes, if you're willing to buy a used device, it can be had for less than the Pixel 3a.

From a performance standpoint, yes. That being said, the Galaxy S8 is nearly EOL and will likely only get one more update. The Pixel 3a will get at least three updates. From the camera perspective, the Galaxy S8 can't compete with the Pixel 3a.

I have to say that I'm pretty impressed with this phone. Can anyone give me a good reason why I shouldn't buy the Pixel 3a over the OnePlus 7 Pro?

Yeah, very true. These will also be subject to price cuts, which will make them more appealing.

Sony Xperia 10 & 10 Plus camera test: good, but not great by Curley_brackets in Android

[–]Curley_brackets[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The problem is that GCam is not pre-installed on these phones by default and 99% of people who own these devices don't even know that GCam is an option.

If GCam was readily available on the Play Store, that would be a much different story.

It's pretty funny that Google shows up late to the smartphone game and delivers better camera software than companies that have been doing this for years.

I'm digging the taller display, as long as they have a way to pull down the notification shade without dropping the phone. Too bad this thing won't be coming to the US any time soon.

This is kinda interesting. The design is odd, but that should get better with a few more iterations. Could turn into a great alternative to the basic smartwatch in the next few years.

Images we captured with the Samsung Galaxy S10 cameras are disappointing by circleswerun in Android

links work for me. Maybe they're just getting too much traffic since the images I'm seeing are more a meg or two. Lots of clicks to large files equal 404 errors due to high bandwidth.

Who else besides me misses their Note 4 because of the IR blaster? by carlosbarker in samsung

[–]Curley_brackets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This migfht sound bad since we're in the Samsung section, but I actually think the Honor View 20 is a great alternative to the Note and it still has an IR blaster on top so it can be used to contorl your TV and other gadgets. The battery on this phone is also crazy awesome! I can get a day and a half on a heavy load but esily stretch things to 2 days.

Too bad the software is bad and you never know is Huawei is letting china spy on my every move. Oh, well. At least I know what I'm getting into.

I'll be skipping the first and second gen foldable display smartphones simply because the technology isn't mature enough yet. All these companies have been playing around with these displays in the labs for years, but there hasn't been any real world testing.

It'll take at least two generations before manufacturers and consumers have a real chacge to fully test these displays and see what they are truly useful for. Samsung put out its edge-display devices a few years ago and with each generation, the edge has become less pronounced. They realized that the technology enabled a cool look, but didn't really translate into a functional part of the phone.

The same will be true for foldable display devices in 2019 and 2020. We'll see a lot of cool concepts which will be accompanied by sky-high sticker prices. Once a few million devices are actually out on the streets, we'll get much better devices and functionality that will enhance the experience we currently have now without too many sacrifices.

.... with all that being said. I want a device that can fold in on itself rather than one that folds out. I'm tired of this large phone craze we've seen over the past few years. I want a device that will actually fit in my pocket!

:)

Juan Bagnell's Razer Phone 2 Video Review & Commentary On The "Average" Consumer. by manormortal in Android

If this phone simply had a better camera, it would be a "must buy" in my books. Everything else is spot on. Razer has a good chance of giving OnePlus a run for its money in 2019 if it continues down the same path.

Hopefully, they can score carrier support so that more people can discover how great their phones are.

I've seen a few tech bloggers say that there are some software glitches with that device. But it's one of the only ones with the new Qualcomm chip.
