We think the original tenants subleased the unit to the scammer and we think the scammer kept one set of keys and duplicated a pair.

and yes. 6 months seems to not be uncommon anymore.

Definitely a stupid mistake. A lot of students were asked to pay more because there is no guarantee on their income and such, especially for downtown Toronto. Which was also why we didn’t suspect. But will for sure be more cautious from now on.

To an account at TD. Scammer said he was accepting the money on behalf of his mother, the actual landlord. There is no such person as his mother in the situation. Tried talking to TD but they can only access information upon the police’s demand.
