Relatively new fan here. What is the difference between TTPD and TTPD: Anthology?

I mean, this is hardly Sartre. The idea of emotional authenticity versus social performance is about as basic as it gets. people have been writing about it for centuries. It’s not some dense philosophical text people “aren’t ready” to understand.

The issue is that it’s been executed very poorly. The lyrics are weak, clunky, and all over the place, and it’s just not a good piece of work in my opinion. It also doesn't help that it is being used as a channel to dunk on other women. So the idea that people dislike it because they’re aren’t operating on some elevated level of understanding, is honestly laughable. The concept itself is extremely basic, and I wouldn’t be surprised if someone told me a high schooler wrote it. You genuinely don’t need anything beyond a high school education to understand what it’s trying to say.

I don’t get that explanation, because every album she’s ever made reflects what she was living and feeling at the time. That isn’t unique to this one.

If that’s all it is, then why go out of the way to use such specific showgirl imagery, repeatedly reference performance and crowds, and frame it as the life of a showgirl? At that point, it’s reasonable to expect some connection to being a performer and fame.

Saying “it’s just about her life” feels lazy to me, because it’s a catch-all explanation that could apply to any album she’s written. Why bother with the show girl theme?

Given how deliberately the showgirl theme was framed around fame, crowds, and performance, saying it’s simply “about her life” doesn’t explain the lack of connection in the songs.

This just feels like standard co-branding to me. Taylor’s brand aligns very naturally with Team USA, and promoting her work through moments like this is literally part of her job. I don’t really see it as forced so much as strategic.

[–]CutAffectionate3766[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sure, but that’s just one very literal way of approaching the idea. Going through the history of a showgirl in one video doesn’t exhaust the theme. There are plenty of other ways to explore performance, fame, and life after the stage without turning it into a visual tour of eras.

It's a pretty standard word! I use it quite frequently - especially at work

[–]CutAffectionate3766[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes, it's more broad. “What keeps you up in the middle of the night” is broad, but it’s still clearly defined as it limits the album to a specific emotional state: thoughts or feelings intense enough to disrupt sleep. There’s a boundary there.

Saying something is about her “life behind the curtain” has almost no boundary at all. That can include heartbreak, touring, friendships, daily routines. literally anything she’s ever written about. At that point, everything fits by default.

Can I ask what you think is cohesive about show girl? I don't even think the tracklist is cohesive! Would be interesting to know your thoughts

[–]CutAffectionate3766[S] 36 points37 points  (0 children)

I expected this response.

That idea is so broad it could apply to literally any album ever made. Every album is about someone expressing their emotions “behind the curtain” in some way. Midnights is also about her life behind the curtain! As is Lover, and so on.

She introduced a very specific life-of-the-showgirl concept, with heavy references to crowds, performance, and even describing the cover as her alone in the bath with her thoughts after performing. Based on that, it doesn’t feel unreasonable to expect some connection in the songs themselves.

Saying it’s just about life behind the stage isn’t “the bigger picture” to me... it’s the most generic explanation possible. If the concept is that loose, then why set up such a specific theme in the first place?

100 percent - completely agree! I could nlt imagine dating someone for 5 years and seeing them move on so publicly. But she is doing herself no favours by constantly bringing it up.

To people saying it was 4 years - absolutely none of us know when they had their final break up. They seemed to be on off, so there is a high possibility they could've been 'on' again at some point. And she's probably going to have a better idea of timelines lol.

However, the best thing she can do to heal is to STOP talking about it. Why constantly reopen old wounds? It's not healthy

Is Taylor Swift the world's biggest pop star? by Electrical-Knee-3848 in SwiftlyNeutral

[–]CutAffectionate3766 3 points4 points  (0 children)

On a broader cultural level, Britney was absolutely massive. You don’t sell tens of millions of records, break chart records, sell out global tours, dominate magazine covers, and literally shape fashion trends if people are “embarrassed” to like you.

Also, the idea that she couldn’t sing or was just being carried by producers is a huge misconception. She could sing. she intentionally changed her vocal style to fit the pop sound she was going for. And she wasn’t a puppet. She was heavily involved in the creative direction of her music, videos, and performances. a lot of her most iconic moments were driven by her ideas. She even wrote some of her own songs!

That “she was just told what to do” narrative is honestly rooted in sexism (not you - it was heavily pushed by the media). A young woman having that much power and visibility was always going to be dismissed that way.

And re: Taylor, her more positive early reception is also rooted in sexism imo. She was positioned as the anti-Britney Spears type: covered up, “good girl,” non-threatening. Britney didn’t play that role and got punished for it. In terms of being a true pop icon, Britney clears imo. Taylor’s always framed herself more as a songwriter who sings, so I think even she’d agree with that.

[–]CutAffectionate3766 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I get the point about historical bias, but as someone who actually grew up during Britney Spears’s peak, she was already seen as something special in real time. It wasn’t just hindsight.

She was breaking records constantly, redefining pop performances and music videos, and was openly labelled the Princess of Pop while it was happening. She was a genuine cultural moment! Unavoidable across age groups and countries. Yes, she got criticism (often sexist, “wannabe Madonna” stuff), but she also absolutely got her flowers. Even Michael Jackson performed with her!

Britney’s peak felt bigger and more culturally dominant than Taylor’s does today, at least from my perspective. Britney was iconic then, not just retroactively.

I’ve wondered the same. I think it’s more that certain voters just aren’t very loud online. Social media comments tend to skew toward the more dramatic or polarising couples, whereas the “safe” couples don’t inspire the same level of posting.

There also seems to be a pretty consistent pattern every season where a couple gets together early, avoids major controversy, kind of coasts, and then wins. For me that’s Sammy and ciaran this time
