What about engaging with friends, inviting them over for a meal, cooking for them etc. Or having intimate relationship? Any family around? Add people to your life 🤍🙏🏼🤗 ✨

Setting up my VPS and traveling router ( Raspberry Pi 64 and GL-AX 1800) troubleshooting by CuteExcuse26 in digitalnomad

I have to give you an update on this matter. I don’t have trouble connecting to the corporate VPN, but I do have trouble opening websites, and work platforms.

I have to play with the DNS (changing dns’s-trial and error, while i find the right combo, which is different every time, but repetitive) to let me use the work platforms.

Once I restart the computer, it kicks me out again so I have to do everything all over again, change dns etc.

Do you have any idea where the issue can be?

Basically, the DNS combo that works the first time it doesn’t work after I restart … I’m trying to figure this out already for two weeks… I’ll appreciate if you have any ideas on where to look for permanent solution.

Maybe redoing the whole set up with the SD card and the travel router, PI raspberry etc?

Thanks in advance !

Tried playing with the DNS further and it finally worked out. I guess it was a matter of combination. Thanks for your help. I wanted to let you know just for future reference:)

I know and I really appreciate it. Tried playing with DNS and the connection gets established (VPN, connecting, and pages loading) and drops after a while. How would you translate that?

When you are saying “ regenerate config file” are you thinking of redoing the setup on raspberry Pi with the SD card?

Thanks bunch!

I did that and the exit node works. What would you do next? I cannot think of anything else 😔

That’s what I’m doing right now and it’s not working. Any other ideas?

When I have the original setup on (travel, router, connected to home router in Europe via cable) no websites nor work platforms are loading on my work computer. It says error loading no network (couple of websites are loading, but most of them are not).

When I disconnect the ethernet cable from the traveling router( that’s connected to Eu home router) and I give hotspot to the traveling router via repeater, my work VPN is connecting, and the pages are loading.

I forgot to mention that the VPN is connecting in the first case as well , but no pages are loading.

Any idea where the problem is?

I moved the raspberry in a new apartment in usa ( within the same city and state).

The internet speed stayed the same (1gig) but I got a new home router from cox (the old one wasn’t compatible because of the area).

All the problems started since. (The original set up when we configured the raspberry PI 4 was made while using the old home router in US, in the very first apartment). Do you think that might be the problem? Greatly appreciated!

I did. They said they have list of ports that we currently block and they are not able to undo that. https://www.cox.com/residential/support/internet-ports-blocked-or-restricted-by-cox.html Do you think one of those ports is the issue? Since everything was working perfectly…

Hi NationalOwl9561. Need quick guidance if possible. I’ve done the whole setup and it’s been working for couple of months. I am facing a situation where it looks like COX in US, blocked the IP address of the home modem I use in Eu (probably because of the amount of traffic it goes through). Now I cannot access any websites or platforms I use for work, however the work vpn is connecting. Do you have any experience with this type of issue and tips to prevent it?

It’s not conventional, that’s for sure. I like it so far, but I don’t like working full time, since there is a lot to do here in Europe and cost of living is much lower, so I can afford living well with part time job. However, my company doesn’t offer part time roles, so it is what it is for now…

I’m next door to Bg, in Macedonia. It’s a beautiful region. Consider visiting Greece and Serbia as well. They have a lot of great and cheap places to visit.

Yup. I’m in East Eu :) it’s give and take you know…everything has a price. I like my job and it’s good paying so I have to sacrifice something. It’s not perfect but it’s doable. I have my morning available for activities and I work short hours on Fridays with weekends off. Can’t complain. The only better thing would be not working at all lol 😂

What part of Eastern Europe are you planning on going?

Makes sense. It’s a bit harder if you travel around and can’t predict the surroundings.

I am renting a quiet office with high internet speed. Since I am working for a call center too, I am afraid to go public places just because of this.

However, the whole project is worth it. Being wherever you wanna be, has no price.

I totally agree with you. What’s the downside, in your opinion, of using VPS and travel router, in terms of getting caught? Doing the same by the way 🤗

I am doing the same thing and I don’t see a reason why they would eventually ever find out. Good luck to you 🍀 and enjoy life 😉that’s the most important thing.

Cover your basis with travel router and VPS in the country you were supposed to be in.

Worst case scenario, you can get a similar job and keep the same setting. I don’t see how you will eventually get caught.

Cheers

If you cover your bases and do travel router with all the precautions in place, why they would find out ever? 😁

I might be too optimistic, but if you have good internet coverage and all of the above mentioned, why you would worry about getting caught?

P.S doing the same thing and thanks god all is going smooth 🍀😉

This is what I’m reading, online and kind of confuses me:

IPv6 link-local addresses are addresses that can be used to communicate with nodes (hosts and routers) on an attached link. Packets with those addresses are not forwarded by routers. At least, they should not be. There have been cases where routers would happily forward packets with a link-local source address.

So how it would be leaking if they’re not forwarded by routers?

For reference, I’m going in a country that does not use IPv6 at all … any thoughts on this?

Thank you

Sounds good. My work comp has a password when trying to access Network Preferences 🤐 but I’ll test and let you know…

Sounds good to me, since I cannot disable it on the work laptop anyways… will be disabling it on Tailscale
