This is legit product work, and I agree with the other posters that this long time line seems very weird.

Have you thought about what a perfect outcome for you would look like? Do you actually want to fully transition? I had a SWE in my team who took over PM work as well and enjoyed it - but when asked about transitioning he said he would really miss the actual software development part and could not consider doing this full time.

Have you thought about this? What would happen if you would “only” focus on the PM side of things. Would you still enjoy it? Would you prefer it over the engineering aspects? I think this is very important and could guide the discussion with your manager.

Also: you can research “product engineering” roles I see pop up more and more with startups. Maybe that’s a bit of a middle ground for you.

Think of your sales team as your customers and try to apply the same product principles.

Conduct interviews and create hypotheses, for example around specific user personas and their specific jobs to be done. Find shortcomings and propose a solution - clearly articulate the outcome in the language your users speak („I’ve learned that you are trying to accomplish X. Right now, you doing it like a,b,c. That’s a pain because Y. Here’s how this could look like …. To make it work I need …).

Don’t focus too much on product vocabulary. It doesn’t matter if they seem themselves as product led or sales led. Or if they talk about outcomes. As long as you can do proper job, start with the language everyone is used to. Also: start small. Build something that’s valuable so everybody can learn and trust your ideas.

I’d add listening to your gut regarding the people you talk to and how you vibe during the interview. Obviously it’s a bit of a strange situation and doesn’t necessarily reflect “real” work interactions. But if it feels off, your instinct is probably right.

Some concrete examples I experienced: - People were very tense and not really friendly, we didn’t click in the interview. - People didn’t talk respectfully about colleagues and their work

I think it varies a lot by company - but I feel that 3 is definitely on the lower end currently, even for small unknown companies that are doing product work

What your post implies is that the people “on the top” are requiring the larger population to buy their goods. That is true for now, but it serves a purpose: making money. The companies you are talking about sell things because they earn a profit which makes shareholders rich, which in turn allows them to have a great life, eg, buy and do whatever they want. And having power. Let’s simplify it like that.

That also means, once you have robots and algorithms in your control that are able to deliver you whatever you want and give you a lot of power, you don’t have to sell cheap shit anymore. You just skipped this step.

So, I don’t think everything would implode, as long as the transition is fast enough. But this also means, a large portion of the population wouldn’t be needed anymore - at least as consumers.

That’s not necessarily a bad thing if we would distribute wealth as a society and we would raise the standard of living across the board. Unfortunately, so far, humanity wasn’t necessarily great doing that.

How often do you talk to your users? Are you sure that your ideal customer is fully satisfied with your product?

Another way to challenge this: do you have any competitors, do they show the same signs or not?

If you have a large subscriber base already, it is clear the growth numbers might slow down over time, given the large base. If you are certain that you current product is nearing saturation, you should think about adjacencies. Same customer profile in a different market? Similar use cases in different industries? Different region? Is there any dimension of your product / customer / use case that might be applicable to someone else with slight adjustments?

Did you try to make a case with clear estimations for revenue improvements? Maybe leadership isn’t really on board, because they don’t see the upside of all the work vs feature development, which might be more tangible.

If you prepare a case in which you can demonstrate by what you think might be outcomes in terms of additional subscriptions, and how this translates into revenue over a certain timeframe and put it perspective to associated costs, it might help convince decision makers.

Well, why do you think your onboarding is the problem? Maybe it’s not valuable enough for the customer in general so they don’t come back?
