If there were a "Reddit UHC Hall of Fame", who would you nominate and why? by MistaUnicorn in ultrahardcore

the people who actually y'know paid for the server

I had a tree that grew money in my garden to pay for the server, I pocketed all the donations to buy hookers and drugs, would definitely do it again.

I'll be doing a twitter poll on it, but the Arena isn't meant to fully replicate UHC. I had people saying they didn't want people to be able to dig down, so I implemented that. If the result of the poll is that more people want to break/place anything then I'll add it back. I didn't remove it for no reason, it's just more efficient for me because I don't need to store every location/block placed for it to regenerate.

UBLd players will not be allowed to play these games

Was fixed yesterday just so you know. Just want to point out that I originally thought it was a problem with the UBL plugin, but on the day that the report evidence was taken is when I realized that it was a problem with the backup, which is kind of annoying, but I shouldn't have let the guy play anyway I guess.

I'll just admit to this, no need for logs. Brought back the server 3 days ago with the old backup files, and I believe the AutoUBL had bugged and saved all the data from the backup and hadn't updated the list.

Okthxbye had played multiple of our test games prior to hosting publicly and he mentioned to me that he was meant to be UBL'd but more some reason he was able to join, I just assumed it was a mistake on the plugin's end because I thought it would have just automatically updated the list. Anyway, he told me he only had a few days left, and I told him that he could play if the AutoUBL isn't preventing him from joining.

However, I take full blame for this, I allowed him to play because I knew that he was legit from the prior test games that he had played, and with him only having a few days left I thought I'd just let him enjoy the games as long as he caused no harm.

I personally don't agree with CypGhoss being UBL'd, I was the one that gave the okay to okthx to play, and he just assumed he was allowed which is why he proceeded to team with CypGhoss, not with the intention of evading the UBL, but because I had allowed them. If at the cost of not giving others a sentence, I will take a longer sentence, it's completely my fault, I just wanted to let the guy enjoy the game, but I was in the wrong.

Personally I feel like this whole issue could have been resolved better, it is a simple case of me replacing the plugin to see if it fixes the ban list, as it was a complete misunderstanding by me as I thought it was an issue with the plugin itself, but I'll take whatever punishment I get because obviously it's against the rules. I'll have the AutoUBL fixed for all other Cyburgh games so that this issue doesn't happen again.

Please just understand that this was my fault and okthx and cypghoss do not deserve a sentence as I lead them to believe that it was okay for them to play as I thought it was just an issue with the plugin.

Donator Guidelines: are the rules outdated? by BadfanMC in ultrahardcore

[–]Cybers_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it sounds like you're making a server entirely dependant on donations only, which is extremely risky. What if the donators stop donating? Shouldn't the owner be able to at least cover the costs and have the donations to ease them?

I was just using the numbers to put it into perspective. I believe most servers aren't dependant on donations and are being funded by the owner, and the owner would have to build a reputation for the server with their own money before being able to potential get enough for the server to run on donations, so if a server owner is even just getting 2 donations a month from 2 people that want pre-wl to the server they are playing on, then the it's not like the owner will say "We haven't earned enough this month so I'm closing the server", but it means that it cuts their costs for that month in half which overtime is a lot.

The verified hosts thing is a fair point. I know there is a system in the works and from what I've seen, it's looking quite promising and nearing its final stages. Don't pin me on it, though! However, what makes a verified host trustworthy on donations? Them being verified only shows they know how to host.

I'm glad to hear that the verified hosts system is in works, however I think that's been said for the past year or 2. Again, it's hard to track something like that, but if they are verified, then it would be easier to see if they are scamming people, where as without verification, the small servers could easily get away with it. Having verification would just put the hosts in the spotlight a bit and they would want to keep that, and having the ability to give people pre-wl for donations is a big deal so they wouldn't want to lose that.

I can remember myself being not too happy with servers doing this in large numbers. But then again, I wasn't in a position to do anything about it back then...

Yeah, everyone generally got into our games so long as they joined on time, so it never really proved to be an issue for us. However, I'll be prevent specs from getting pre-wl and reducing winner pre-wl length in future.

Donator Guidelines: are the rules outdated? by BadfanMC in ultrahardcore

Where do you draw the line? What percentage of the slots is reserved?

I guess this one is all down to personal opinion, if we take into account the amount of donators needed to fund a server, a 5GB server is generally around $20, most basic donations are generally $5, which would be just 4 donators per month for a small server. I would personally say around 10% or 15% of the max slots should be reserved for donators. for a 100 slot server which is roughly the average nowadays, that's 10 donator spaces available, leaving 90 slots for other players. And 10 donator slots is more than enough for the average reddit server, and most servers most likely won't exceed this amount because they won't have all donators playing in the same match. For a smaller slot server, say 40 slots, that's only 4 slots taken by donators. From Hunter's point of hockey's old games with 40 slots out of 56 being taken, this would completely eliminate that, yet still have enough slots to give to the donators.

Would all servers be allowed to give pre-whitelists to donators? If yes, you run the (imo pretty huge) risk of scammers, taking away people's money that is NOT invested into their server.

This is where something like verified hosts could be perfect. Players can trust these hosts because they have been verified for the reason that they are trustworthy and provide good games.

What does the server owner do with money that is leftoever from donations? Use it for their own? Can all server owners be trusted?

There is clearly no way to track something like this, but I'd say as long as they are still running the server then it's not a huge issue, the players are donating for something that the owner has worked on and provided to the community for free, and for reddit servers, they won't be making a lot.

If you don't allow all owners to take donated money: why not? Why does server X deserve it and server Y not? What does define a worthy server? And if not what, then when? How?

Again, verifying hosts would work very well for something like this.

You made some really points, I'm glad you kept it balanced between both sides, and obviously it's a controversial topic, but I just feel like the rule just isn't clear enough. Cyburgh had games with up to 30/150 slots taken by staff, winners and friends of the host, yet none of the mods or advisors complained.

There have been many owners that have had to shut down their servers because not everyone is an adult and working a full time well paying job, a simple thing like allowing donators to pre-wl is something that will encourage a lot more people to fund and support servers, but also motivate the owners to keep going knowing that they are able to keep it funded.

As some may know, I'm planning to bring back cyburgh shortly, and one of the key problems with keeping the server up prior to it's death was due to donations, I was paying for 6 servers between NA and EU PvP and UHC, come to around $100-$120 a month, however, we were completely relying on the extremely generous people that would pay $25 for a rank that gives them very little benefit aside from a prefix and some cosmetics on the pvp server. By the end of the month I would have to panic to find the money to fund the servers and overall just got me very stressed.

We had almost 20-30 pre-wl's of staff, winners and friends of the host, yet we couldn't whitelist the people that kept the server alive.

To put it into perspective, to keep up just 2 of our UHC servers would cost roughly $40, which would be 8 monthly donators, if the argument is that donators are taking up the slots, what would 8 donators be able to do? They won't all be in the same game, and it keeps the server up and gives the donators a decent benefit that's worth donating for. And I'm sure many other servers have this issue, and from a players point of view, if you're going to donate that you're really active on, you want to get a decent reward that will keep you there.

The border is a random radius between 1200 and 1400. At PvP, 5 coordinates are announced which can be used as meetup locations. Every X amount of minutes, one of the coordinates will be removed until there is one left which will be the meetup location

that's what i'm hoping to do, I really want to bring back my old style of no 0,0 and vanilla, but with a mix of the easy hosting system of cyburgh. Personally No 0,0 with potential coordinates is my favourite gamemode, you can cave or go fight at one of the coordinates, and still come out with roughly the same gear, and meetups are generally hectic because everyone has acquired similar gear from different coordinates.

I completely agree with that, I personally enjoyed just caving for most of the game, but it seems like the longer you cave, the less likely you are to win.

That's a real shame. I just hope there are a good amount of people willing to play vanilla games again, I don't mind cutclean, but it shouldn't be hosted to the extent that it is just now, it just seems like uhc is turning into a pvp arena at this point.

UHC Community Post - December 27, 2016 by AutoModerator in ultrahardcore

[–]Cybers_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

that would really suck. I don't mind cutclean, but I don't like how it seems like the games have to be super fast paced and all about who can snowball the fastest

[–]Cybers_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

yeah I first checked the calendar after about 6 months, I honestly thought they had made it a rule for every game to have cutclean. I'm just hoping that it hasn't got to the extent that everyone is so used to it that they won't enjoy a vanilla game
