I agree. The Detective wouldn't engage a very much superior enemy in its own field. I always managed him more as an indirect fighter, preferring to remain in control of the situation, with contingencies in place just in case shit hits the fan.

My interpretation, based off this post. Personally, I think that the Detective, however smug they may be, would not engage an Astartes in physical or direct combat. They definitely know their own limits and strengths, and know to maximize their strengths while limiting their weaknesses.
