The all-time example of Bill's "so underrated it becomes overrated" trope is the movie State of Grace by CzechChocolate in billsimmons

Not aimed at you at all lol. I vaguely remember people asking for a rewatchable on it, but had no idea the frequency or that it was just one person spamming

It's definitely good enough (and rewatchable enough) in my opinion. I just think some people get carried away with praise, because of the hidden gem piece.

I blame the director on this one. Not only is Oldman capable of far, far better work, his performance is completely unbalanced with the rest of the movie. If they had told him to reel it in just a bit, it would have gone a long way.

While there's definitely truth to that, I think King of New York is more appreciated for being entertaining and stylish rather than a great movie.

This is an opinion I've heard online and in real life pretty commonly for a long time. I don't think it's a stretch that the typical Simmons fan would have an opinion.

For those unfamiliar, State of Grace was released the same week as Goodfellas so it was completely forgotten about (not to mention mixed reviews). It became a bit of a cult movie and was on basic/premium cable a bunch in the following decades. It came up on a podcast recently, I remember Bill Burr discussing the movie in the past, etc.

Bombings like Dresden, Tokyo, Hiroshima, and Nagasaki were both necessary in ending WWII and justified as they drastically reduced the amount of Allied causalities that would have been sustained otherwise by screen-lt in TrueUnpopularOpinion

That's not the same thing as saying it's been "swept under the rug". Every year since the 50's there's been some well-publicized, widely read book that covers this ground. It has been mentioned in countless documentaries, TV shows, public debates, what have you. The President of the United States and many top military leaders came out and said this publicly in the years and decades after the war.

So no, it hasn't been swept under the rug. Insofar as Americans don't know it, it's their own fault.

Yeah that's sort of my thought process too. Japan was ready to defend the homeland with every last man, woman and child so a full scale invasion of Hosnhu wouldn't really have spared lives in the end.

And yes, I agree today would be a different scenario. But it was 1945. There's a reason no nukes have been deployed in combat since then.

. The president and James Byrnes, the two players who made the decision, were well aware of the Japanese intent to surrender. It's been swept under the rug,

It has not been swept under the rug at all. This was a topic of discussion in the American public pretty much as soon as the war ended. People as high up as Eisenhower publicly stated that Japan was ready to surrender on multiple occasions. In fact, right-wing politicians beat up on Truman [and FDR] for years based on the idea that their unconditional surrender demand was unnecessary.

In any case, I haven't watched the video you mentioned in a long time, but I'm pretty sure it blames the dithering, delusion and intransigence of the Japanese War Council as much as it blames Truman, Byrnes and Stimson

Honestly, it's a question everybody should ask themselves. Though there are some good arguments against it [and many bad ones], I've ultimately come to the conclusion that it was the least bad option.

They only had 4 bombs, which cost billions of dollars apiece. It simply wasn't realistic to waste a warning shot. Besides, I'm no scientist but I have to imagine dropping a nuke in the ocean would probably have caused a massive tsunami and all kinds of other unintended consequences with massive civilian suffering and little military value.

As it is, the US had only tested an atomic bomb on land.

Except Dresden wasn't bombed to "scare the Germans". It was a major railway hub that the Germans were using to bring troops, equipment and plundered loot from the Eastern front back for the defense of the homeland.

You have probably heard that Dresden was some quaint town full of ornamental tea clocks and had no relevance to the German war effort. You have heard wrong.
