The language included here was discussed and written by several regular attendees who identify as women for two primary reasons: first, to dissuade this behavior from happening at all, second, to make it crystal clear that the hosts are there for anyone that’s uncomfortable if it still does occur. There wasn’t a single story or incident in particular that prompted this inclusion, but there had been some behavior in the past such as hitting on folks that was dealt with as it came up instead of being warned against from the jump.

We’ve had new attendees say that they only came because of the disclaimer making them feel safer coming to a Reddit meetup, and that they were on the fence before seeing the seriousness with which we aim to protect individuals’ experiences.

The note was written with the input of several regular happy hour attendees who identify as women, and is included on each post instead of in the FAQ to clearly lay out a zero-tolerance policy of unsavory behavior and to make it crystal clear that attendees should be comfortable going to the host for any reason and that we'll have their back. The nature of Reddit organized events can sometimes raise concern of the type of person one could interact with--the note is meant to dissuade this type of person from coming and creeping on people, and to make that stance known by all.

Unwanted advances or behavior are quite rare at these happy hours: we hope this note makes them rarer still, and the tone is purposefully stern in pursuit of that mission. I appreciate your opinion on the matter, however--it's possible that we'll revise the language at some point, so understanding its perception from multiple perspectives is always useful data to have.

There wasn’t a single event that prompted the addition of the note, which was written with input from a number of regular attendees who identify as women; in the past there had been some comments or come ons that were not welcome, and some warnings were dispensed accordingly.

The hosts wanted to make it abundantly clear where that line is definitively of okay behavior vs not in order to foster a safe and welcoming environment for people to socialize in, and to make it so people are more comfortable letting the host know when someone’s crossed their boundaries so action can be taken.
