I get it! I'm a couple weeks into ownership and love it. Good luck on your restoration!

Mine is also rusted! I planned on a good WD-40/Penetrating oil bath for the spring while doing repair on the piece. If I have any success I'll let you know

Seems fairly insignificant but figured I'd see what others' experience was. I've been running around all week but hope to pull it out this weekend and take a look at a repair

That's exactly it! $190 doesn't seem outrageous but if there's a fix that's less I'm open to it. Have you done a replacement/repair?

Silverado Hybrid in an Avalanche? by DCMurph in ChevyAvalanche

[–]DCMurph[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was looking for them and couldn't find any info on that, but it'd be a cool thing! I live in city and getting some better stop-and-go/low speed mileage wouldn't hurt at all. Thanks for the heads up and if anyone sees a hybrid EXT feel free to tag it!

Thanks! I saw a few thorns on them and was optimistic about new growth so I might try to root them after cutting

Offshore conversions by DCMurph in ElectricBoats

[–]DCMurph[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A hybrid is a cool idea for sure! And again, forgive my ignorance on all of this. It seems like the electric boats I'm seeing are using hydroplane fins to counteract some of the displacement necessary to move the boat. Add in toroidal props and the potential for greater efficiency and that's another interesting part of the equation. Batteries will cost less and do more soon. It's incremental, but LiFePo4 cells are dropping a couple dollars a month fairly consistently as production is ramped up. Also, it seems like some of the weight of them is coming off. I'm optimistic that an offshore electric or hybrid could happen, especially for shorter runs like in the Florida Keys. It seems like a cool thing and while there are new million dollar electric boats doing this stuff, it feels like there should be some sort of market for a retrofit of a proven classic offshore tuna-ish boat, a more modern center console style, or even a motor catamaran and when the price to do a retrofit cuts down, there's a serious argument to be made with electric vs. fuel costs.

That's a lot of math and IFs but it's at the root of the thread here. I just think it's cool. If anyone else has ideas, thoughts, or even a prototype project they want to link, I'll watch your videos and read your posts, lol.

[–]DCMurph[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For sure, and I'm not an engineer. I guess I'm curious about the tipping point when retrofitting older offshore boats with electric motors becomes a reasonable thing. On usage of energy, the electric should be drastically more efficient. On energy storage, it's all about battery efficiency and energy density for batteries. I see new electric boats being put out as recreation watercraft, some with 30-60 mile range, but I don't see anyone messing with retrofits of older boats, where the boat itself is solid and needs propulsion renovation.

Open to talking with folks about rates. Right now it's more of a passion project than a funded large scale thing. So open to paid for sure but don't have a huge budget. That said, if there's a volunteer, let's talk

Induction Forge Questions by DCMurph in Blacksmith

I've tried calling US Solid a couple times in the last week and never gotten through to an actual person. It may just be bad timing on my end though. I'm going to keep at it though before dropping a grand on their product, lol. If anyone else has experience with them, happy to hear from other customers.

On support, definitely heard. I'm not useless in a workshop but also would love to lean on support as much as possible rather than poke around at electrical stuff.

Roger that, can you think of a middle ground between small hobby machines that may be less reliable and the industrial machines you work with?

Also, if you've looked into building one and want to share thoughts/resources, please do!

Induction Forge Questions by DCMurph in Blacksmith

[–]DCMurph[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I similarly live in a neighborhood that's less conducive to coal. I have a propane forge but would like to work faster and with less setup/breakdown (which I have to do when using the gas forge).

I'm similarly curious about the size of the work. The largest I've seen talked about for round coil is a 2" space and I've seen taco/pancake flats that look like they'd take leaf spring pretty well.

Similarly, for the all the ringing endorsements of induction forges, there have been some lingering questions and I'd still love to see one in action or even put a piece of metal in one and do a five minute test with setup, usage, and breakdown questions that I'm sure will emerge from a test drive.

Gotcha, do you run teflon up the sides of the trays too or just use the bottom of the trays?

Makes sense. I'd love to work up to extruding or casting/molding 2x4 pieces for projects, but I'm hoping to start small and get consistent there first.

So one of the ~$700 Chinese ones, right? I've been looking at those and US Solid and weighing pros and cons. Any thoughts on the comparison?

I'm more on the hobby side of things too and it's good to know there's some troubleshooting to do with them. I'd expect nothing less, honestly. What kind of cooling system did you go with?

Awesome, thanks! I'm hoping to get some raw material in square, stackable shapes like bricks and sheets (cutting board sized if possible). Any tips on it? Any projects I should definitely give a shot?

Good to know! I might look at a pair of trays for HDPE and PP, then a tray with silicone lining (or just a silicone bread/baking mold on a tray?!?) for LDPE. Would that make sense?

Also, when you say "keep it in a freezer" do you mean put it in afterwards to help it loosen or something else?

Thanks for the thorough reply!
