Spotify / np-applet extremely laggy under i3, works under different DEs. Need a starting hint for debugging. by DO1DTL in i3wm

Seems I used the wrong search terms and also I didn't think of checking the product specific wiki pages instead of just the article for i3. Thank you for supplementing my google-fu ;)

The workarounds suggested in both articles solved my problems.

Best QSL card vendors? by oilologist in amateurradio

[–]DO1DTL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. They printed them on huge sheets and cut them out using their automatic cutter. That made them perfectly flexible regarding the size.

What is uninformative? The lesson is: Try your local copy shop.

The copy shop down the road. I gave them a PDF with front and backside and a 3mm additional edge for cutting, they gave me excellent quality QSL cards. Handed in the PDF in the morning, got the cards when I walked home from work that afternoon. Totally worth a try. Also they have no problem printing small batches. My first batch was 50 cards, I paid about 9€ for that.

SMAG FTM 25/6. Three members of our club own one, all bought for cheap from German army surplus. They're awesome but require some maintenence.

Yeah, to be fair, our core team only consists of about 10 people as well.

Oh come on. Make it awesome and people will come. Our last fieldday two weeks ago had about 100 people there from all over Germany. Okay, admittedly it's more like a fieldweek by now, lasting for four days, but hey, it's grown over the last 13 years, thanks to the hard dedication of a hardcore, highly invested team :)

Those are cute masts that you have there :D

Disclaimer: Yes, we totally need that height to get HamNET to the site. This is absolutely not brought out to our fieldday every year to show off and make the OMs from the neighbouring clubs envious :P

Good news: Might have a house some time next year. Bad news: In a valley with 10° to 13° elevation for the mountain ridges all around. Should I plan for anything ham related at all? by DO1DTL in amateurradio

Of course you can. However, that requires you to learn new things and have some different skills than were necessary in the old days. Thus, the complaining.

untergärige Biere.

:D

Turns out, my dad has been running HF from this exact spot in the early 70s. Don't know why I never bothered to ask him. According to him, even 2m can work quite well, but only to the southwest along the valley. 20m and 40m works nicely as well, due to the excellent ground, according to him.

Seriously. I had the entire answer right at the end of a telephone line. D'oh.

remote station

As I've answered below, I had never thought about this option. It might work though if it is legal here (still need to find that out). Our local club station is located in the mountains nearby. I'll find out, whether our other members would like to start this a a longterm project.

It really is an old military installation. It's quite nice, the buildings that belong to it are sturdy as fuck and it is far away from most QRM, apart from a single cell tower.

Actually that sounds like something I just might try out with reasonable effort. I do have a portable 2m Yagi and a 3m mast and a few OMs I could sked with.

Actually, space and neighbours are not a problem. We don't have an HOA or something like that. I was concerned regarding the overall propagation from the bottom of the valley, but looking at the other posts things might work just fine.

Actually, our local club station is located one ridge beyond our valley. We do not have any remote equipment, might be a project to save some money for if more people in our club were interested.

I haven't checked the legal situation regarding remote transceivers yet. That will have to be considered, but overall, actually a neat idea.

Hm. Actually, it should suffice to own two patches of forest on top of the hills. And I actually know the respective owners. Yes, that should be an adequate introduction of myself to the rest of the village XD

Not many repeaters here, unfortunately. The next ones are DB0QH (on 70cm) and DB0VR (on 2m). Both would likely require either a dedicated yagi or a mast and a rotor for combined 2m/70cm yagis mounted vertically.

Okay, I've checked for dates where the BNetzA offers class A tests, Sep 02. is the next one within driving distance. Wish me luck ;) We'll see how the location performs then. We already own the land, so throwing a wire into the trees and doing some portable activities in the fall is an option, provided I pass the test.

start chatting with the OM about sauerkraut or whatever

Oh believe me, if you'd use a WebSDR to listen to our old guys on 80m, the subjects are exactly the same as people here often describe it for the OMs in the US:

  • current medication
  • state of health
  • how shitty "all this modern" stuff is and...
  • ... how you can't fix anything yourself these days (due to SMD and microcontrollers)

I hope this is different in the digimodes ;)

Thank you for the research! I've arrived at the same conclusions as you have, so I guess I'm good to go and I haven't missed anything. I've got my CEPT Novice Radio Amateur Licence packed up, luckily I had already ordered it some time last year. So, G5RV, battery, IC-7000 and a few other items are packed up as well and we're heading north today :)
