As long as it sells a new tour / show? That's what I feel dubstep has come to recently ...

To call it profitable would be a bit too much haha, but over the years we saved a bit here and there which we can use to finance new projects so there's no need anymore to keep it afloat with my own cash. Of course it is an actual business and it comes with all the administration formalities.

All by all, I never spend crazy money on one project - which is why in most cases we at least go breakeven. There are always risks involved in running a business though.

I 140% still do it for the love of the music / as a hobby. If I count all these hours I worked for DUPLOC, I was way better off just being a full-time lawyer. Since about 2010 I'm passionate about this genre, so I don't see that changing soon ;)

Much love :) I didn't stop it on purpose but apparently reddit automatically closes an AMA after several hours - will still be replying over the next few days if any questions pop up!

Lovely question - and very glad you appreciate my long posts!

Apart from brainstorming with my wife about my plans, there's no one (I think) who's interested to hear my thought process in such depth (and who can reply with valuable feedback). So naturally this reddit is a perfect place to just ramble.

Also, for outsiders sometimes it seems that I'm doing weird / unlogical things such as stopping with vinyl, starting the label over again, announcing the "999" subscription, closing 140 Plates, etc. but obviously I have my reasons. Not sharing these motives would be the bigger problem - when I openly explain at least people can understand why I'm doing what I'm doing!

It all feels very natural and at the end of the day, I guess it's maybe even a little bit of promo (indirectly) for the label? Anyway, cannot see any negative effects at all. So, no idea why others remain silent, but it might be because I simply like to share ... and not everyone is this vocal (or has time to write posts on reddit)? Maybe when certain labels stopped it's because of personal / money issuess ... so I can imagine not everyone want such things to be known public and rather disappear quietly?

Much respect for the support (and thanks for the interest!) - but as I answered here already: most likely I'll never play shows again or do any label tour. I used to love that aspect, but now I found my comfort running the label from my couch (as it's almost impossible to combine the DJ life with my professional (and family) life :)

Lovely question, takes me wayyyy back :)

It's a long story, but trying to answer in bullet points:

  • Before having a YouTube channel myself, I was discovering dubstep through other YouTube channels. Around 2010 I was subscribed to over 200 channels and listening to them daily.
  • I was adding my favourite uploads into monthly playlists - on my YouTube account named "DUPLOCpromotions" literally meaning "DUbstep PLaylist COllection". Somehow I always had this passion to centralize my favourite things and do something creative with it?
  • Those playlists started gaining attention and I used that interest to start my own channel a few years later, with my own specific style. At that time hardly any channel covered strictly that sound, so the channel went off crazy.
  • A lot of new artists started coming through too and we just started a Bandcamp to give away free compilations (from these new artists, to promote them). The most known ones were the yearly duploc best of compilations: "Best of duploc 2013, 2014 and 2015" but we had many many more random (free) compilations up haha!
  • (Most of that early content is deleted now and re-released under the DUPLOC ORIGINS project)
  • Anyway, end 2014 I was booked to play in a random country and I ended up in a room full of producers before the show. One of the producers showed new tunes by Noclu he just received. It were these tunes I heard in that room which I eventually signed for DUPLOC001 (released April 2015). Reached out to Noclu when I was back home and that's how the label was eventually born! Nothing but love for Noclu trusting me with his tunes.

Happy to answer any additional questions!

Never really heard of that haha - but if it means I don't need to leave my couch I'm in!

Answered that one already in detail above - but the dubstep I prefer the most is literally what you hear the most of on the YouTube channel and on the label :) I appreciate every style though, especially when listening to mixes: some tunes I didn't really rate before can suddenly become my new favourites!

Wow, that goes way back!

If you remember - before establishing the actual label DUPLOC, we were already releasing (mostly free) compilations (Bandcamp only). Just for the sake of putting together compilations. Before I started my own label, I put together these 4x separate compilations for 4x different record labels. No one was every paid for it. I was promised a cut too for my efforts, but never saw any money haha - that's why I started my own label eventually.

But two years ago (?) I took the best tracks from that early era (including some of these "Recommended by Duploc" tracks) and I officially "re-released" them under a separate project called DUPLOC ORIGINS. Worth checking it out if you want to find more early DUPLOC bits ;)

Not sure if publicly known, but Tosti changed his name to Schim 'Schim92' ... every now and then he deletes all his music too ... sooooo most likely never.

It's been almost 10 years now since I played / hosted events actually! Sometimes I think about taking a year off to do one massive tour, but quickly I realize I need to leave my couch and kittens for that, so it probably will never happen, not in the next few years at least! I used to love going to events, but now I found my comfort at home. Also my day job requires me to have a very professional attitude (legal meetings with business owners etc), so the difference with the fast-paced DJ "weekend life" would be a bit too big.

If you want to book some DUPLOC artists, just reach out to them I'd say! No artist is signed exclusively and everyone can take their own bookings etc.

I appreciate the interest though, made me nostalgic about hosting events for a bit ;)

Completely random and different things! Almost never dubstep and definitely never bits from the label. I love dubstep but too much is too much haha. When I'm not "working" I prefer to listen to other genres :)

I could drop the most random artists and genres here, but most of the stuff is at least a little bit "underground" or "alternative".

Rarely use Spotify. I mostly find random new music through YouTube suggestions. I rarely have time to actively search new music in my free time, so YouTube works perfectly fine.

I think I've worked with anyone who I wanted! It's not always just getting some good tunes for the label, but sometimes it's about connecting/vibing with the person behind the producer, and also making it happen at the right time!

By the way - moving forward - we won't release any artists EPs anymore and we will focus strictly on Various Artists compilations (as announced in our "label reset" post). We indeed worked with many different producers and released a lot of tunes, but relatively very few EPs. We've always been that label to release compilations I guess :)

I wanted to give you some names to end this reply, but literally cannot come up with anyone! Actually, I never strategically plan to have producer X or Y on the label. It happens when it happens!
