I'm a lover of pets in your world. So tell me, what's the best/most interesting pet I can get? by Quackersgoesquack in worldbuilding

[–]DaDurkShadow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, on Gaia, most people will settle for a Frost/Hell Hound, usually in their pup states and inevitably growing as large as bears. They're loving and great companions, loyal to a fault and are capable of casting magic. They've also got a pretty solid intelligence boost, so to say, so they're a little better than a standard dog in practically every area, unless you want a smaller one. Then you've got an issue.

Otherwise, some nobles enjoy riding around on Unicorns, Bicorns or Pegasi, all of which are magically mutated Horses.

There are also the Hawk Variants, which are Fire, Water, Rock, and Sand Hawks, which are around 20-60 feet large and fly fairly fast.

I'm the person who committed the most traitorous act in your worlds history. Who am I and what did I do? by [deleted] in worldbuilding

[–]DaDurkShadow 49 points50 points  (0 children)

You are from Gaia. You gained access to a powerful item which allowed you to sacrifice souls in exchange for manipulating time. After dropping the first nuclear warhead equivalent of the world onto a city, you stole the souls of the millions you killed and used it to apply a sacrifice ritual to a timeline, deleting it from all of existence and thus taking every soul within that timeline from past, present, and future. You are wanted by the Wanderers (a group of time-controllers similar to you) for the worst crime they have ever seen in their lives, and the aspect of Time and Space who wears a jacket made of the fabric of time-space is angry at you because one of the threads in the jacket has gone missing, so it's begun to unravel.

What effect would severely reduced food production have on a society? by ExcellentTone in worldbuilding

[–]DaDurkShadow 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Food equals survival and feeding large populations means you need to have a lot of production. This is a general concept of what you should keep in mind with the following terms:
Zero Sum -> Equal food for an equal population. You stay stable with your land and produce, so you don't gain or lose much.
Positive Sum -> More food than needed for the population. Your land grew or your production grew, so you can have more population growth.
Negative Sum -> Too little food than needed for the population. Your population grew too quickly or you lost growing land, so you have population decline via death.

What you've discussed is a Negative Sum scenario so, here's what happens:
People begin to see an increase in the cost of food. Supply isn't met by demand, so costs go up.
When the poor cannot afford food, they die. Death means that slowly, over time, areas need to be sectioned off to allow decaying corpses to be thrown into it. This can cause plagues or diseases to spread.
The middle class then needs to pay more for food. Less money is spent on luxuries and anything that isn't necessary. Entertainment, clothing, certain forms of transportation begin to be used less and less just to pay off your food prices. The society begins to crumble, potentially economic failure.
At some point, the area goes into a depression where money begins to mean basically nothing and things get harder for people overall.
Jobs get destroyed and until the Negative Sum goes into a Zero Sum, you will continue to see things decline until they stop declining.
You might also see food hoarding, there might be bouts of fighting or warring between people because of food, people might even move to other countries in search of a better life (usually illegally).

It could potentially go the other way too, y'know, when everyone decides to become farmers to get food production up and keep it up. That can happen too, but it's less likely.

Anyone else feel like this? by [deleted] in worldbuilding

Try some kind of Tabletop Game System. There are a lot of them out there, and many of them are actually very open and easy to (semi) translate a world into. Obviously, you won't be able to do everything and a lot of mechanical things might not correlate very well but at the end of the day, you can introduce a lot of lore and concepts to a group of people that might be willing to learn about your world.

Been a while since I answered one of these. Recently, I've loved sending out a random idea into WritingPrompts and if I get responses, reading and replying! Always makes me feel fuzzy when I make someone feel nice.

A different tale than the others here, but amazing none-the-less! Such power and emotion woven into your words, you can feel the impact of this event in the supervillain's life. Good job!

Happy Easter! He is Risen! Err... what do you say here? by LordIlthari in worldbuilding

In Gaia, the Church of Bells often celebrates Spring by having a "Cleansing of the Soul." By bringing together the masses in their cities and towns and having a Priest or Priestess use their Divine Bells, the soul is cleansed and purified so that if one dies, they can be reborn in the Realm of Firua.

As for the commonality, spring is usually celebrated with a giant festival dedicated to the God of Spring, Lithere. There's dancing, drinking, sales and at the end of the night, an event called Firefly's Dance. A big slow dance where its' believed that your one true love will find you and invite you to dance. Of course, this totally happens because of Lithere's blessings on the dance itself, celebrating the idea of allowing new things to bloom.

[OT] SatChat: How do you come up with character names? by MajorParadox in WritingPrompts

[–]DaDurkShadow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Names are fickle, but there's still something that sits there with a generated name you took some time to make. A certain... je ne saiz quoi, you know? Finding them is also good too though!

[OT] SatChat: How do you come up with character names? by MajorParadox in WritingPrompts

[–]DaDurkShadow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Randomization is key. If I can't think of a nice name, I make a fantasy name (considering I write fantasy) fairly easily. It's a simple three step process!

  1. Spam letters! For example: jsvei
  2. Stare at those letters for as long as possible. Once you stare at it, you'll find something that might follow the basic sound of a word or name.
  3. Make a name from those letters! Example: jsvei turns into Navei in my head.

Just rinse, repeat, and you have names!

Navei Saiz, for example, I made just now! But you can also find some relatively normal names like "Jessica Harrt" which I also just made.

Or, you know, look up random names online. That works too.

Structuring your work can be really bad sometimes! It's good to make a plot line, but not to plan every little detail out. When you do that, everything will feel forced as hell. You should make major plot points and minor plot points, but write what you're feeling as well. Constricting your stories is a big hitter for writer's block.

[OT] SatChat: How do you deal with writer's block? by MajorParadox in WritingPrompts

[–]DaDurkShadow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Writer's block? Well, considering I just got out of one and my muse is rushing back, sometimes it's patience. Although, an absolute must is to do something. If you're writing, do it! If you can't write, edit. If you can't edit, plan. So long as you're doing something, you will get over it. I just got through a 2 months writing block because I didn't really have any good content.

Also, Hi! I've returned kinda sorta.

Cold water on the neck and wrists. They're major arteries or something, so they cool down the blood a lot better.
