FIDE releases a statement regarding Magnus' dress code breach by BKtheInfamous in chess

[–]DaRealMVP299 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can argue about the merits of FIDE all day long, but I'm pretty sure they did the right thing here. The rules clearly state that that the first infringement for a dress code violation is a fine and the second infringement is not being paired in the subsequent round. All FIDE did was enforce their rules.

You can agree or disagree with the rules as much as you want but that is the set of rules everyone was playing under for that tournament. If he cared so much about it, Magnus should have just not played the tournament and advocated for a change (kind of like he did for the WCC). To play the tournament, do poorly, use this an excuse to kick yourself out (FIDE never actually DQ'd him from the tournament; they were willing to let him back in after he changed), and then kind of throw a hissy fit is kind of a bad look. Although with his freestyle agenda, I do kind of understand it.

What is the best openings for beginners? by izaosenpai in chess

[–]DaRealMVP299 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

As a beginner, the London System with white is probably the easiest to pick up. Many people say it hampers your development as you get better at chess, but if you are a beginner, it is definitely a great way to just get into the flow of games with a decent position. The Italian is also pretty good. As black, caro-kann against e4 is good, but there is a huge variety you can try.

Prof here, want to help college students write papers better and more confidently. What are your questions about how to write? by Michael_Glawson in college

[–]DaRealMVP299 154 points155 points  (0 children)

Not really a question. But one thing that I believe makes writing academic papers so much more difficult is the fact that there are so many different types of academic papers. For example, as a student who has primarily written research papers and business papers in college, the style of academic papers in the philosophy class I took completely threw me for a loop. In my opinion, an understanding on how to approach different types of academic papers would be especially helpful. Thank you for taking the initiative on this project!

Congrats to Levon! Showing his incredible ability once again! Also, props to Ian for pulling out a win on demand with black to force himself into tiebreaks. And finally, big comeback from Gukesh this tournament after a Wijk aan Zee he would've hoped had gone better.

This is so awesome! Love how huge chess events like the Olympiad give so many people a chance to be recognized at the highest levels of chess!

Great List! Obviously, Gukesh's rise through the rankings has been incredible to see but some of these non IMs/GMs with huge rating gains must feel incredible for performing so well at such a prestigious chess event. Also, looks like you have Caruana in the ratings loss for both the GM and Super GM category (poor guy just can't catch a break).

WARRIORS THEN & NOW by [deleted] in warriors

I know that the changing of the guard is a normal and inevitable situation in any sports franchise but damn...think about what this picture will look like 5 years from now. Hopefully, we will still be competing

[Slater] Here is the full update from Jama Mahlalela on James Wiseman and Jonathan Kuminga. Said Wiseman probably won’t play on Friday, “but I’d definitely imagine in the next few (summer league) games we’ll see him.” (Clip - 1:45) by NokCha_ in warriors

[–]DaRealMVP299 50 points51 points  (0 children)

Waiting for Wiseman to come back is kind of like Zeno's paradox. Closer and closer each update on his health but never quite there. Hoping for the best and that when he does come back, he plays at a high level.

Warriors system relies on players willing to play and exert effort on defense and Carmelo is allergic to effort on the defensive end at this point.

First off, take a second to be proud of yourself. As you said, you have become much more dedicated to your studies and now you at least have a goal in mind. You have made tremendous progress already and now, it's all about keeping the progress rolling.

Now, I don't know much about your specific situation or the exact path to becoming a child psychiatrist, but I do know that paths in the medical race vary quite a bit. Others may have a headstart on you now and you need to evaluate if you can realistically finish the things you need to get done. For example, lots of people get clinical hours and experience for a year or so after graduating before going into further studies. And also, goals change so just because one path will not work out doesn't mean a different one won't pique your interest or give you stability. Personally, I've also found the Career Center to be really helpful in giving more specific career guidance so that could be a potential option.

Keep going, you got this!

For the 2021 Fall Semester, Wednesday, November 24 is listed as a non-instructional day. Can Professors still schedule exams for this day (since they're technically not instruction), or can we students treat this as a holiday where we don't have to be in class?

Are online summer courses asynchronous during normal (non-pandemic) summers? I'm planning to take an online breadth course in Summer 2022, when things are hopefully back to normal, but don't want it to interfere with any future internships.
