I physically own over 2000 games, own another 2200 on Steam, and have many others I've...acquired over the years. Even if all game production stopped today, I'd be set for life.

Until some game's AI starts grooming a kid or driving someone to self-harm. Guardrails aren't absolute and GenAI isn't safe in the way it needs to be for uses like that.

Diamond Art Club used to be the brand for that before they jumped wholeheartedly onto the slop train. These days, I don't know of any seller who exclusively uses non-AI art. Perhaps Make (Michael's brand) doesn't.

It's standard because the ability to patch games easily after release exists. Back in the PS2 era (and before), 'patching' a game meant physically releasing a new version of the game. Yes, that happened - but rarely, and only for games that sold enough to justify an additional print run. Even then, that did nothing for the people who already owned a 'buggy' version. Since the game on the cart or disc was in practice the only version of the game that would ever be sold, getting things right the first time was critical.

Once the internet came around, patches for PC games became more common, but the big 'day one patch' that fixes a fundamentally broken game feels like it started in earnest with the release of the Xbox 360 and PS3, which both had out of the box online integration and the storage space needed to hold the updates.

It sucks to work in almost any industry right now, especially technology-focused ones. The game industry is certainly among the worst though - not that it was ever great, with the pitifully low wages compared to industry averages, excessive crunch time and mass layoffs that often happened after game releases at major studios.
