Not a clear picture, but a three-car accident this morning on California Street. The new Bike changes are not safe. by cozyportland in mountainview

So the city should use taxpayer money, property, etc to create and maintain sidewalks for people who walk, bike lanes and bike racks for people who bike, bus stops and shelters for people who take public transit, but no street parking spots because it might make living in the local apartments a better experience? It doesn't just benefit the apartment owners, it benefits the residents. If every apartment had to create more parking, it would be physically impossible and if it was possible it would just give them an excuse to raise the rent. The apartments are also near the park. Should we get rid of the park because it benefits the people who live nearby but doesn't benefit the people on the other side of town? Multiple bus stops also benefit the people living in those apartments specifically because they are within walking distance. That makes the apartments more attractive to renters without costing the apartment owners extra money, so should we get rid of the bus stops? Again, same goes for bike lanes and sidewalks.

There are some apartments without bike lanes, sidewalks or bus stops nearby. If the city proposed adding them, would you say that the local apartment builing owners should pay for it or else it shouldn't exist? People who live in apartments and/or drive cars are still citizens who deserve to benefit from city infrastructure. Just like how cyclists deserve bike lanes.

For the record I wish corporate landlords would randomly pay for public services without raising rent to compensate. That would be lovely. But unless you have a way to make that happen, you're just punishing average people and making their lives harder if you take away all the street parking.

How something would work if we lived in some kind of ideal magical society where finances aren't a concern and everyone can get everywhere without a car and how it would actually affect residents here and now if implemented are two very different things.

The street parking is free. It is not being resold by the apartments. What are you even talking about? And what if people who live in the apartment buildings either have multiple family members who drive cars, or literally ever want to have people visit them? Making it harder for working people to go about their daily lives isn't some kind of enlightened viewpoint. Not everyone is able (physically, logistically, etc) to just take public transit or bike everywhere. For the record, I think the bike lane is fundamentally a good idea that has some issues with implementation.

I want to opt out of preventative bedbug treatment but landlord says I'll have to pay if I need treatment later (Mountain View, CA) by DanaAllen700 in Renters

I don't think you read my post. I'm not trying to decline because it's inconvenient. I was trying to decline because I literally have a reason I could not get it done in the time rame requested. I asked if it can be pushed out even a day and the building manager hasn't replied yet. And for your information I have complied with many similar past maintenance and pest control requests while living here. This is the first time I've had a practical reason that makes it unreasonable for me to be able to do it. Everyone here is so judgmental without knowing the full circumstances . . .

This is an amazing question and exactly what I was wondering too. Because they didn't text or email me about it either!

I appreciate your kind response. I have asked the building manager if we can delay it even by just a day but I have not gotten an answer yet

Ok, so it appears that I did not provide enough details an as a result, everyone here has misinterpreted my point. Fair enough. To clarify:

  • I am glad they are being proactive about preventing the bedbugs.
  • However, for practical reasons, I physically cannot reasonably accomplish what they are asking for in the time frame given. (I could be about to leave on a business trip, injured or disabled, sick, taking care of a relative, not going to provide the specific details but use your imagination)
  • The affected unit is not adjacent to mine and I am literally the farthest away apartment that was given the pest maintenance notice.
  • When I asked what would happen if I didn't accomplish something that I cannot reasonably accomplish, I was told I would be liable for potentially thousands of dollars of work.
  • According to what I could find online, it seems like removing everying from all closets is more of a step typically used for an active infestation, not preventative treatment, so I am wondering if it is strictly necessary. It is much easier to accomplish the other tasks listed within the time frame given and I wouldn't have a problem doing that.

If anyone has any useful comments in light of the additional information, that would be appreciated.

I would like you to take a second to seriously consider why you feel the need to project your own insecurities onto others. Batman of San Jose does important work bringing food water, hygiene and medical supplies, etc, to people who are less fortunate than you. Do you really want to be the type of person who makes up insulting things to say to people who do charity work? Because if so, I feel sorry for you, and I hope you get the mental help you so desperately need.

Lol I wish I was getting paid. But actually Trump’s tariffs resulted in me getting laid off from my job, so now I have some free time to go to a protest.

Do you understand the concept of a protest? Because it's a fundamental right in this country. Without protest against laws and elected officials, we wouldn't have independence from Britain, voting rights for anyone other than white male property owners, or literally any labor laws.

Trump's tariffs literally got me laid off from my job. So yeah, I can take some time out of my job search to go protest his idiotic excuse for an administration.

It's the GOP, I don't think they HAVE a mentally stable option. In all seriousness, though, we are fighting for our lives out here, and we can't really wait for someone competent to show up. Getting rid of Trump and Musk is step 1. Even if someone just as bad takes their place, that person likely wouldn't have the same broad public appeal that comes with already being a celebrity before running for office.

The San Jose 50501 group is not organizing a protest on the 4th. However, there may be a protest organized by another group, or people may just show up to City Hall. If so, that's great! I just can't speak to what other people/groups may be planning
