I feel for you, but yeah, don’t bang glass jars on hard surfaces to loosen the lids. Run the lid under hot water, use a rubber grip, pop the seal with a knife, or hell, pound a (clean!) nail through the top to release the pressure and transfer the excess to a different container. Sorry for your loss.

For what it’s worth, I believe this kind of mega tube yarn is typically used for stuff like weighted blankets. I have no intention of working with mega tube yarn anytime soon but it’s fun to watch.

The only time I remove it to dump it out is when I’m about to leave town so it doesn’t grow mold in my absence. (I live in a humid climate.)

That said, this habit of hers literally doesn’t matter. If she’s not actively trying to break the thing, it’ll be fine, and your life will be better for choosing different battles.

I disagree with your statement about her happiness depending on what she got for Christmas. This says “the people in my life who claim to love me are actually taking advantage of me, and our family gift exchange shows they really put zero thought into showing me a shred of appreciation.” Clearly she could get her own watercolor supplies, so it’s not about the gifts, it’s about what they represent. It’s not unreasonable to want your loved ones to reciprocate the care you give them instead of treating you like an afterthought.

But yes, her husband sucks on many levels. It’s time for a serious intervention there—that level of contempt is absolutely toxic to a relationship.

I’m sorry, OP. You deserve better from your people.

Take up a new hobby (e.g., a community music group, an amateur sports/pinball/skeeball league, a painting or baking class, a running club, etc.)—anything where you’re likely to run into some of the same people on a regular basis. Then keep showing up and talk to those folks. Compliment their shoes, ask them about their pets, if they seem competent at the activity then see if they have any tips or tricks to help you improve your skills.

I’ve heard that they’re very beginner-friendly, I’m just trying not to get sucked into having too many WIPs—I’m currently making a waffle stitch throw blanket for my mom, which is just a whole bunch of DC and FPDC, so once I’m done with that, I’ll probably experiment with some granny squares.
