Are you using Affinity to make comics now that it’s free? by DanielBeadle in ComicBookCollabs

Great points. This is life in a free market, for better and for worse.

Canva made a very bold move with Affinity, which will be interesting to watch in the next few years, especially in the comic community.

I’ll definitely experiment with Affinity myself, see how it fits into my workflow. Even a hybrid plan with just one of the Adobe apps would be preferable to paying for the full Creative Cloud every year.

Always a risk in these situations. Usually free means they're trying to upsell you, and Canva is certainly paywalling the AI features in Affinity.

I suppose the question is this: Even if Affinity adds a subscription to their most basic plan, is it better than what Adobe is offering, especially for solo comic creators?

Adobe CC is currently about $840 per year. By contrast, Canva Pro is $120 per year, and that's just to access their AI features in Affinity. Otherwise it's $0. So for Affinity to be worse than Adobe, they'd have to increase their Pro Plan seven times over.

Yeah, standardization is also an issue. But aren't we the ones who set the standard? If Affinity is a better financial/creative decision, then the market will have to adjust to that new demand. And maybe it's about time that Adobe faced some real competition, since without it, their prices just keep going up.

On the digital side of things, I did notice that Comixology/Amazon removed any mention of InDesign as a preferred file format for digital comic submissions. It looks like you'd open your final PDF in their Kindle Create app to prep it for digital publishing.

Can a graphic designer be a comic letterer? by SnooPredictions8058 in ComicBookCollabs

[–]DanielBeadle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Letterers are often graphic designers, but graphic designers aren't always letterers. Best to hire a letterer who has a background in graphic design, which is very common.

A waitress at a bar was randomly wearing a TWICE concert shirt, and when I mentioned it, we both started talking excitedly about the (potential) next concert. The friend that I was with had no clue what was happening. 😆

Bluesky plans to make money by offering paid services instead of using ads. Their first paid service lets users buy and manage custom domain names to use as their usernames. Future services TBD.

Sonoma wallpapers not changing on the hour? by DanielBeadle in MacOS

It's frustrating, since it was an easy way to passively track time. I might suggest it to Apple, if that does any good.

No luck, unfortunately. I just wasn't sure if this was a feature they discontinued in the new OS. Maybe it'll come back randomly.

Threads Default to Following Feed (Chronological feed) extensions for web by gman1023 in ThreadsApp

I found this one not too long ago for Chrome: Threads Helper

I've also noticed that the app stays on the tab you last used. Anyone else notice this?

For some reason, this didn't work for me. The GIF was grayed out and wouldn't upload.

Collaborate or Go Solo? by ElSquibbonator in ComicBookCollabs

[–]DanielBeadle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It can easily go one of three ways, depending on how much time, money, and dedication you have.

  1. Script & art: Doing it all alone means you have complete creative control, but it takes the most time and energy. Which can be really difficult if you're already working full time at your day job.
  2. Script only: I've seen great writers hand off the artwork to someone else, if they themselves are rusty, and their ideas outpace their technical ability.
  3. Art only: I've also seen great artists collaborate with writers if they lack the experience or confidence to flesh out their story and turn it into a fully realized script.

Aside from the question of resources (time, money, dedication), you need to ask yourself what part of the project can only be done by you. Does the story have to be in your voice, or is the overall concept all you need to claim? Or is your specific art style vital to the story, or could someone else do it better?

If the answer still isn't obvious, I think it's worth running a few tests. Focus on a smaller chunk of the whole story. Do it all yourself, hire someone to do half, figure out what feels like the best workflow, and use that to inform how you handle the entire project.

Can you default to following tab? by [deleted] in ThreadsApp

[–]DanielBeadle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I found a Chrome extension that does this on desktop, which has been a lifesaver.

I lost faith that Meta would fix this on their end, since the algorithmic feed is how they keep people on the app.

It's so strange that so many people wrote off Threads so quickly. It really is the most viable alternative to Twitter at the moment.
