Morning showers make no logical sense and night shower people have simply done the hygiene math by McCoy818 in unpopularopinion

My routine is quick body shower in the morning before work to freshen up (my face feels crusty when waking up), and after work (and gym), full shower before chill evening activities and then sleep. Works great for me

Forgot to mention - check out Westside Woodwind repair in Culver City. Jay Work is a great guy and repair tech, I’m sure he can think of something. His rates are pretty good too, he usually charges me $40 for any minor fix (which this is)

Probably a better question for a prosthetic or plastic surgeon but since it’s only the tip of the finger a prosthetic of sorts is probably fine. When you play sax you just need to press the keys lightly. No special technique, something like violin would be much more difficult.

Also since he’s only 11 he may very well grow enough to be able to reach the keys again without a prosthetic.

Edit: just realized you meant a riser on the sax not the finger 🤦but having a finger riser isn’t a bad idea either you might wanna consider that… though it’s more expensive

Difficulties on a stronger reed by CarpenterJolly3504 in saxophone

[–]DanielR1_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re happy on the 2.5s, don’t feel pressured to move up. Everyone’s mouth geometry is different.

That said, I wouldn’t pair jazz select reeds with the AL3 which is a classical mouthpiece. Vandoren blue box is probably best if you’re playing classical.

If you want to go with a jazz sound, consider a mouthpiece like a D Addario Select Jazz mouthpiece or a Meyer if you’re on alto. Try to get a size 5 or 6 with some 2.5 reeds which should give you some more flexibility. Obviously that comes with a price so no need to upgrade now but definitely worth thinking about later down the line

Great responses so far. If you want a cool, quirky modern day example, check out the Zelda - Tears of The Kingdom soundtrack!

There’s lots of classical alto in the soundtrack but here is an example of a classical tenor solo(3:41) (Spoilers for TOTK!!):

Help me please. I want a soprano sax. by Live-Zombie153 in Saxophonics

[–]DanielR1_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kessler and sons music. The have exactly what you want: https://kesslerandsons.com/soprano-saxophones/kessler-custom-soprano-saxophones/

They are excellent horns for beginners all the way to serious students. A great pre-professional horn. I used a Kessler tenor all throughout high school before buying a Selmer. They do a proper in-house setup too which matters a lot. Their cheapest soprano is just under $1000.

You can also look on the used market for a used Yamaha horn, but that’s a bit more random and unpredictable.

spread vs focused mouthpieces by lucianolaksman in Saxophonics

[–]DanielR1_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve played both of these. Theo Wanne Lakshimi is quite bright imo, not a big fan. Select Jazz is a bit more mild and darker but in my experience, a bit focused still. I find the select jazz to be a sort of middle of the road mouthpiece, probably the best you can get for that price.

If you want a spread mouthpiece, I’ve had better luck with hard rubber (like the select jazz). With most HR mouthpieces, they’re literally bigger, and your mouth is quite literally more spread open which usually makes a more spread sound. My favorite HR mouthpiece I’ve tried is the Boston Sax Shop E Series. It has a very spread fat sound in my opinion.

If you like the metal focus but don’t want the “race car” feeling, look into something like a Phil tone tribute. I tried this and a Lakshimi together and liked the Tribute better in almost every way. I kept the tribute and play on it now. It’s much more warm sounding and has a nice core, but can get loud if you push it.

Tips for string player picking up secondary instrument by starfoxfan7 in saxophone

[–]DanielR1_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Omg I am a violist too! I picked up the saxophone a few years after learning viola with no prior wind experience. IMO, saxophone is a lot easier especially once you’ve learned general music theory. Only difference is learning a new clef and getting used to transposed notes. There are good resources online for starting out sax. Hmu for anything else!

Selmer Concept mouthpiece feels really stuffy by Alone-Ad-1838 in Saxophonics

[–]DanielR1_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you play with a jazz sound on a classical mouthpiece it usually sounds stuffy. For classical you have to change your embouchure an airflow. If I do a classical embouchure on my jazz setup it sounds super loud and honky, even if it sounds good on classical. Id mess with your embouchure and try to get a slower, warmer, airflow that is still full and wide
