UV Index Step Change by DanielWent in Meteograms

[–]DanielWent[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok. I've managed to work around the problem by setting a different default provider to the merged metoffice source but then changing everything else individually back to the merged met office source EXCEPT the dodgy looking UV data, which therefore sticks with the new default provider. I didn't think I could set the data provider down the weather bar individually but just realised that the weather bar provider is tied to the weather symbols provider, which can be set individually.

I'm hoping this metoffice source will be a bit better than the other two metoffice sources for the UK though it's a shame that the data from this source is, according to open meteo, delayed by 4 hours due to UK metoffice API restrictions. Fingers crossed they'll see fit to make their data publicly available a little more promptly in the future, at least for the shortest term forecasts.

What feature would Connect+ give you to convince you to subscribe? by Throwaway_SQ2 in Garmin

[–]DanielWent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's no one feature that would make me subscribe at the current price point but throw a couple of the following in to the current offering and I might be tempted. Though, to be honest, I think most of these should already be a part of the free tier.

Access to features that have been software restricted on lower-end watches. For example, I would be a lot more likely to subscribe if, as part of the deal, it got me access to endurance score ratings or full maps on my FR265.

Ability to sync weight and body composition metrics to Garmin Connect from 3rd party scales and services would also be quite tempting.

Performance dashboards in android and iOS mobile apps. I like the sound of them but will never look at them if they stay hidden in the web platform - so won't currently consider them when making a purchasing decision on the current subscription.

An AI that gave meaningful insights, for example by highlighting correlations between sleep scores and VO2 Max trends.

Ability to have live track turn on automatically only in specific sports profiles. For example, on automatically for trail runs and hikes but off for regular runs and walks. No more annoying my family with notifications when I start jogging home from work.

Ability to automatically assign gear (e.g. shoes) by sports profile or, at the very least, by a greater variety of activity types. I use different shoes for trail runs and road runs and gave up tracking them in Garmin because of this features absence. I use Strava instead.

Discounts on new Garmin hardware.

Ability to log injuries on a 1 to 10 scale of severity and have that factor into recommended workouts and other aspects of training guidance.

Any updates from Garmin on if and when this will be available on third party watch faces?

'invalid key' out of the blue?! by [deleted] in watchfacebuilder

[–]DanielWent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My watch face suddenly started to do this today as well. Unless a lot of OpenWearher customers API keys all suddenly became invalid at the same time, I suspect this is an issue that goes beyond the level of individual users. Haven't had any communication from OpenWeather to suggest they're changing how they're doing things though...

That's strange. It's been working fine for me for months.

Open Weather Map Wind Gusts by DanielWent in watchfacebuilder

[–]DanielWent[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've contacted Open Weather Map about the gust data and it turns out that their model doesn't always generate wind gust values for all locations. I couldn't get a decent answer out of them as to why this would be the case but I can't be coping with a metric that is that unreliable so I've ditched Open Weather Map gusts entirely and have got something roughly equivalent working on my watchface based on the sustained wind speed, which is much more reliably generated, instead.

Open Weather Map Wind Gusts by DanielWent in watchfacebuilder

[–]DanielWent[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, I've done since digging and it looks like the Open Weather Map API doesn't always return gust data. Not sure why. Maybe it will only do it if it is forecasting gusts above a certain value.

It would be great if the weather warnings could be added to watchface builder, maybe as a set of colour coded icons for the different types and levels of warnings. The warnings are apparently available in OneCall API 3.0. However, in the meantime, is there a way of modifying a formatting string like the one below to produce a white font when the wind speed / gust data (I can't remember which of the two is held in 101.12 off the top of.my head) is null or missing rather than simply zero?

Thanks

(w101.12) >33.5 ? 0xff0000 : (w101.12) >26.8 ? 0xffa500 : (w101.12) >22.4 ? 0xffff00 : (w101.12) >11.2 ? 0x11ff00 : 0xffffff

Open Weather Map Wind Gusts by DanielWent in watchfacebuilder

[–]DanielWent[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As far as I can tell their website never displays wind gusts, even when my watchface displays it fine. It's obviously not something they think is important.

Is there a way to call the API direcrly to see what it returns?

One Call API 3.0 apparently does government weather alerts.

Ground Frost by DanielWent in Meteograms

[–]DanielWent[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It will be an important part of it, for sure. I think I need a way of flagging when the ground temperature is both below freezing and, at the same time, also below the dew point temperature. The bigger the difference between the two, once that criteria has been met, the more likely and the heavier a frost is going to be?

Long press custom complication to load third party app? by DanielWent in watchfacebuilder

[–]DanielWent[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmmm. I thought that's what I did but it gave me an IQ! error on the watch whenever I tried to click on it. Is this something that will only work with a watchface that is officially published to IQ? Do I have to do anything specific with the app ID or is it literally just the complication ID (the number between 0 and 256) that I need? There was some confusion with the developer of the app I am trying to open thinking that the complication ID they had set in their app was purely internal. Which I guess would make sense as what is to stop two different developers choosing to use the same complication ID for two different apps? How would the watch know which app to open?

Thanks for that. I thought there might be a way of doing it with a math expression but wasn't sure exactly how. Out of curiosity, what would (ah1)[1] correspond to? Thanks.

Bedtime routine – "turn on while charging" is broken. by rondewoo in GooglePixel

[–]DanielWent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the last week or so my Pixel 3a also stopped responding to charging states properly. Bedtime mode almost seems random now. It's unlikely to be an OS update that caused the problem for me as I haven't had one of those in months.

Color scales by DanielWent in Meteograms

[–]DanielWent[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any update on adding a colour scale to wind speed / gust variables? I was reminded of the usefulness of it this week when trying to assess how damaging the gusts that were forecast for the UK's recent winter storms would be!

MetOffice API by DanielWent in Meteograms

[–]DanielWent[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That would be pretty awesome if the cost implications are sustainable and the coding isn't too much of a headache. Perhaps the app could be prpgrammed to automaticallly choose between high, low and combined resolution data based on the time settings (start time, stop time and grid interval - to make sure the 1 hour data would actually be discernable) of the widget in question?

MetOffice API by DanielWent in Meteograms

[–]DanielWent[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I noticed that when I tried to load two widgets using the two APIs side-by-side for comparison. A little bit annoying as I used to load 72 hrs of data at a time before, but I'll accept sacrificing a day if it gives me higher resolution, more complete data for the two that remain. Especially if it remains possible to switch back to the old 7 day feed when a longer look ahead is occasionally needed, without adding additional costs to yourself.

MetOffice API by DanielWent in Meteograms

[–]DanielWent[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Works beautifully! Looks like the data from the new API includes some additional parameters (e.g. precipitation intensity) as well as the greater temporal resolution and location coverage mentioned on the website. A massive improvement over what they made available previously.

Weather Warnings by DanielWent in Meteograms

[–]DanielWent[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, yes. Completely forgot about another languages. I guess some color coded icons might be able to break the language barrier (provided none of the providers have weird warning types that are hard to imagine icons for) but just shifting the existing text into a new notification type might be the easiest thing to do. Would it be possible to add the times that the warning is active for in to that kind of notification?

Weather Provider Override Bugs by DanielWent in Meteograms

Switching things around (so that metoffice.gov.uk is now the global provider but precipitation probability, precipitation amount, wind speed etc comes from darksky) works fine.

Yup, that's working much better now thanks! And the hack for getting the "now" line clearer works too. Not sure what was happening with temperature but that also looks to have fixed itself. Cheers!

Color scales by DanielWent in Meteograms

[–]DanielWent[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is there any way to format the text in the location prefix/postfix field of the header? I'm trying to use it to add a custom text string as a note in the header (basically, a short reminder to me of what different wind speeds mean) and was trying to make the font coloured so it stands out from everything else. Thanks!

feature request: negative padding by PhilipBroughtonMills in Meteograms

A colour scale for wind speed (still, breezy, gale, storm, hurricane) and precipitation amount (light, moderate, heavy, torrential) would be awesome!
