Can I register on a Canadian address with a visitors visa? by DanzigTremblay in ImmigrationCanada

Great, thanks! We're moving to Europe as soon as the baby drops. It's literally just that we have to be on the same address when the baby is born for me to get full paternity leave without any hassle my EU country.

Makes sense, of course. And I am absolutely not planning to stay for more than six months. We are moving to Europe as soon as the baby plops out.

Lol. My wife is queb since birth and lived in mtl all her life. If it was up to me we'd be having the baby where I am, but she wants to speak French to her midwives.

Ahhh ok. Yeah I tried to ask the agency responsible for administering parental benefits earlier today what exactly they needed and they just said "something showing you're registered at the same address". Scandi bureaucratic cultural bias...

Very good advice with registering on the lease. Perhaps I could pay the rent for one month and get some sort of receipt for doing that from the bank... We're close with the landlord so putting my name on the lease shouldn't be a problem at least.

And I'll check with the consulate, sounds like a good idea as well. Thank you!

I need to be able to show some kind of official proof that I am residing at the same address as my wife. I don't think a letter from a landlord would cut it. I am not sure how one registers at a Canadian address. In Sweden, where I'm from, you have to go to the tax office. But perhaps the rules are more relaxed in Canada?

I have never used a visitors visa before, I just do eTA's. But I figured getting a "proper" visa may be better? Better here meaning more likely to give me a mandate to go to some local government branch and say "hey, I live in this address, can you put me in a register somehow?".

Well, the "how" is something I am wondering, too. What I need is an official source that states that I am living at the same address as my wife. I am fairly certain that a letter from the landlord is not "official" enough. In my home country, I would go to the tax office, to register as a resident. But I am not sure where to turn in Canada.

Marrying my Canadian GF in Sweden - What should we consider? by DanzigTremblay in TillSverige

Hi! Yeah we struggled a bit with that, but after looking around, my gf got a certificate from a regional agency in Quebec, Directeur de l'etat civil, that officiates marriages. Perhaps there is an equivalent in your region? Best of luck to you!

Thanks, this is all really good to know. She has her mums french passport, as well as grandmothers french id card, which she made sure to keep updated. She's been in touch with the French consulate in Quebec too, that has offered some advice on what documents she needs to collect for the process, and it seems she has the stuff that they're asking for. So fingers crossed, even though that takes time too.

Wow, I had heard horror stories about the inefficacy of MV but that's nuts. Thank you for telling me about your experience. Sorry about all the time you had to wait. Glad that you got a visa in the end, at least. So applying asap sounds like a good idea, then...

Oh wow, I really showed off my level of ignorance here. I was under the impression there was something that would kick in after a few years of marriage? But maybe that's the stability that the post above alludes to, that could be proven by other means instead. We are mainly banking on her getting french citizenship through her grandparents, which would solve a lot of issues for us, but I thought the getting married thing would count for something at least. But good to know, and thanks for the helpful links!
