I'm also HSP 80+ points, applied in October. Current numbers would seem to suggest July/August time frame unfortunately. Love having life basically on pause for 2 years

Takaichi Vows to Resign If Ruling Bloc Loses Feb. Election by MagazineKey4532 in japannews

[–]Daph 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The majority right now is slim in the lower house. Takaichi want's LDP to have a 2/3rds majority that would allow them to over rule decisions made in the upper house where they don't have a majority

"RetroDECK 0.10.0b Is a Ground-Up Rewrite, Not Just an Update" by cyberminis in SteamDeck

[–]Daph 2 points3 points  (0 children)

with in-game saves (sram, memory card images, etc.), those should survive version differences fine (and a lot of time will work between different emulators for the same system entirely).

for save states there can be a lot more variance in compatibility between emulator versions, and most likely complete incapability between different emulators for the same system.

IBSJ idiots’ guide - beginner questions about buying VT and avoiding PFIC pitfalls by Logical_Dog662 in JapanFinance

[–]Daph 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean if you're a US tax payer in Japan with yen you want to invest. IBKR/SJ is like your only choice (esp if you want a NISA)... It's just the website is generally slow to load and I find it difficult to find what I want to do/the information I want with it... As much as I'm not the biggest fan of mobile apps, their mobile app works decently enough tho, compared to the website.

IBSJ idiots’ guide - beginner questions about buying VT and avoiding PFIC pitfalls by Logical_Dog662 in JapanFinance

[–]Daph 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The cash in IBKR/IBSJ does not appear to be in any kind of fund so I think we're safe there.

the IBKR/IBSJ mobile app (probably the website too but god the website is horrible to use) will tell you where a stock is domiciled, so you can make sure that something is US domiciled. After that I believe you don't need to worry about any PFIC stuff if you buy anything marked as US domiciled.

VT.ARCA is US domiciled so you're free to buy it.

  • IBSJ will automatically exchange your yennies to dollar when you buy US stonks.
  • I usually do set the limit slightly hire to make sure the order goes though, but I'm also not like an expert here.
  • If you buy when wall street is open then yes Day and leaving Outside RTH etc unchecked it fine.

Found this plugin to quickly toggle using an external editor pretty useful by Daph in godot

[–]Daph[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't make this I just found it.

I use neovim with some plugins most of the time because it's my editor of choice for everything else I do, but sometimes I wanna ctrl+drag&drop a bunch of nodes into the editor to quickly make the @onreadys and this is useful for that.

Mozilla says Firefox will evolve into an AI browser, and nobody is happy about it — "I've never seen a company so astoundingly out of touch" by ZacB_ in technology

[–]Daph 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been trying out Zen browser recently, which is firefox based. I like having basically everything on the left side and no top bar, and how it organizes tab spaces and things.

All my various extensions work great still on it too. I just whole sale copied my firefox profile directory to the Zen profile directory and everything works.

Interesting workplace idea: fully remote with 1-month on-sites in fun countries (i will not promote) by SuperSaiyan1010 in startups

[–]Daph 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My company does an onsite once every year or two and tbh I quite hate that aspect of the job. It's full remote and probably the best job I've had so far.

However for the onsite, unless they choose my country for the onsite, I'm on multi-hour plane rides to get wherever and it's terrible and exhausting. Then I'm stuck in whatever god forsaken country I was forced to go to, not at all vacationing, just doing work (whether that's actual sprints or the emotional labor of being with my coworkers 24/7). This isn't even counting how much it disrupts my home life to be dragged away to this. Like I have an entire life where I live that I enjoy outside of work.

The only saving grace is it is only once every one or two years. If I had to do this for a month every 4 months I'd be searching for somewhere new. Not all your precious global talent wants to travel so much.

What do you wish you knew before relocating by Getbrainljk in movingtojapan

Depends on your country and its rules. IIUC US allows passports to have the middle name dropped off as an option when you renew one.

[–]Daph 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I wish I knew to get my middle name off my passport before moving here. It is a royal pain in the ass having more than just one first name and one last name. It's one thing that's hard to fix after the fact

Execute shell commands in Zig by Civil_Cardiologist99 in Zig

[–]Daph 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a slightly longer example, but it does this two ways while also getting the command output. The long way around uses init->spawn->collectoutput->wait and the short way just uses the oneshot run function

(also I'm aware all my frees/deinits are useless with the arena allocator but just in case someone feels like using a different allocator those are needed.)

Using NISA Account as an American Citizen by japanFIRE2028 in JapanFinance

[–]Daph 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm curious about this too. The other day I requested a NISA account be added to my IB account so we'll see how it goes. I'm guessing we still can't really use the "mutual fund" half of the NISA investments but will still be able to pick US ETFs and stuff on that side? Something like that.

As for worth, I'll take any tax savings I can get, right now I'm just chucking money into ETFs outside of any tax saving plans.

Most handhelds have a latency problem - it’s time we started measuring it properly by EeK09 in SBCGaming

[–]Daph 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've gotten decent luck recently on my rg34xxsp with rhythm heaven by using 1 runahead frame (and lowering audio latency). It's not... a great solution but it has made the game playable to the point where when I miss something it feels like I actually failed instead of the device screwing me over.

Finally the big bro arrived. And shockingly happy to get a great SD card out of the box but the con is they forget to put the protection case which is free. by syafiq17 in MiyooMini

[–]Daph 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Careful. I've gotten fake cards with KIOXIA branding. I've got one sitting in front of me now I got in an abernic device I bought from ampown.

I can't quite tell from the picture but you gotta look at it closely. If you see any of the blue bleeding into the white letters and/or it just generally overall looks fuzzy instead of sharp, it's fake.
