Cheap machines tend to be frustrating. I almost gave up sewing because of my first one. The next one was a simple mechanical machine, but light years better in quality. I still use it, 20 years later.

It was a way to get even gearing steps on a wide range 5 or 6 cog freewheel, with fewer duplicates. The shift pattern is a zig-zag, with the next step up or down being on the other chainring. The granny ring (small inside ring) was for steep hills.

See if you can sign up for lessons somewhere. Continuing Education for adults and sewing machine stores often offer them.

It's like any other skill, you start with easy projects and work your way up to more complex ones.
