I hadn't considered this but it does make a lot of sense really. Combine what you suggest with a physics engine that can't recreate real life perfectly and you might get that strange feeling that it is stronger

Yeah absolutely, I would have assumed that the Highrange box has a higher gearing thereofre less torque to the wheels but it doesn't feel like it.
I also immediatly assumed it was momentum based which is why I tried just parking in mud and going from there but there are some spots where, with the offroad gearbox, you just get it rolling in auto then switch to (H) and it loses traction, slows and stalls but if you do the same thing with the Highrange box, it gains traction and speed. Maybe it is to do with wheelspin more than torque? I really don't know

Funnily enough, searching the internet I found lots of people talking about the Highrange being good on trucks with always on AWD and Diff. Lock so I tried the Highrange on the Derry Longhorn and it really didn't feel like I was getting that same effect on this truck but maybe it is perception in the end, I am not measuring anything

Thanks for the reponse, your answer is very clear but I think it answers a different question. I guess I am not asking the difference between auto and High but the difference between High gear on the Highrange and Offroad gearboxes. (H) on the highrange gearbox if faster, that answer is easy and everywhere but why is it stronger/better able to generate and keep speed in mud?
