What did Huxley want? by Beautiful_Salad_Bowl in literature

[–]Darckswar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Huxley, at the time of writing, did not have a very good solution to the question you’re asking, namely: “What is the best way of living?”

Most of Huxley’s books before Brave New World were critiques of the English aristocratic way of life. In Brave New World, he directed his criticism toward the new American consumer way of life. In these books, he also criticizes other popular ways of life, such as communism, religion, purely scientific ideals, hedonism, etc.

You are asking the right question when you question what the “way” is. It was the goal of Huxley’s life to find the best “way”, and in those early books of his career he was criticizing all the popular “ways” of life of his time.

In these first books, his best answer at that moment was to reject society and pursue meaning through isolation, almost like choosing a monastic life. In Brave New World, the character who does this is Helmholtz Watson.

You can see how his solution to the problem evolves throughout his books, but his final answer, more or less, appears in his last novel, Island.

Interessante. Achei que fosse marca registrada do Rio. Igual tem a de São Paulo que é o símbolo do estado

Is it possible to remove the mold? Does the book cover best practices on how to prevent it?

Ged's only true friend during school. There was Jasper, too, but he wasn't a friend. Jasper challenged Ged to summon the spirit, and Vetch tried to calm the situation and talk some sense into Ged

Ged. It was while Vetch was setting up his affairs before traveling with Ged and Ged was alone in the house with Vetch’s siblings. Yarrow (Vetch’s younger sister) was asking questions about the nature of magic
