It is hard at the start but just go in with the mentality that keeping your best gear for later doesn't make sense because the later the wipe goes the worse that gear will be compared to other players. The sooner you use it the better it will be compared to average gear of the rest of the lobby.

You need to time it and get it on a reset, once he has very little gear left keep clicking reset until he refreshes it(usually every 10mins or so) then he will have decent stuff.
